Elsewhere we present the large display
announcement of the fair to be held in
Rome in October, and trust that readers
will not forget the importance of it to this
county. The p lans adopted by the man
agement of the coming fair, are such as
to bring success upon it as a popular
gathering. It will be a great improve
ment upon previous agricultural shows
in Rome.
An exhibition of the farming progress
•of a country is the most reliable index of
its condition; and its wideawake character
has a direct relation to the promptness
with which the population takes interest
in just such fairs as the one to be held at
Rome. Jet us see what spirit this county
shall evince towards an enterprise that to
directly touclus the f inner’s interest.
Attention is directed to the announce
ment of Mr. W. D. Coleman which ap
pears for the first time to-day. He has
established in Summerville a place of
pleasant resort, where several of life’s
comforts are to be had. Ilis elegant
billiard table, which is to arrive in a day
or two from Rome, will furnish amuse
ment an<l means of skillful practice for
visitors. At his place will be found the
best of palatable drinks, mixed in a way
quite novel to most of our readers, and in
accordance with the latest advances in the
bar onial art; and besides, he will keep
an abundant stock of confections, tropical
fruits in season, cigars, etc.
Of the enticing game of billiards we
need scarcely speak. It is the great
American indoor game, and is a perfect
fas ination. A high degree of skill in it
is often worth a fortune, as is shown by
the career of Phelan, Rudolphe, Dion,
Girnierand other great professors. In
thousands of rich men’s dwelling* in this
country and England, private billiard
tables are kept for the use of ladies and
home society.
