THURSDAY MORNING, NOV. S, 1877.
In Virginia, when a young lady de
clines an offer to convey her home, the
lover asks permission to sit on the fence
and see her go by.
Father Time made another pass at
Alex. Stephens the other day, but the
old whule-bono merely bent over under
the scythe and straightened up on the
other side.
“By Jupiter I those are lovely nights.
Nothing Mars the serenely oi the scene,”
exclaimed young Jones the other 'night
as he Haturn the porch 'ncnth the silvery
rays of the crescent moon with his arms
around the waist of his Venus. Rut
when tlut old woman opened the window
above them, and turned a pitcher of
water on their devoted heads they thought
they had encountered Neptune. Hbe
simply remarked to them us they started
to the gate: “Here; come hack! You
cant Comet over iny daughter in that
Milky Way.” Jones retorted: "Uruuus
off, ami I'll ho hanged if 1 come back
till 1 get ready,” anil he started with a
speed like the messenger Mercury, who
is said to have wings on his heels, and
silence reigned once more. The old
woman says she will Planet. differently
next time.
A Story for Girls.
Sit down on the porch, children, and
let mo toll you about Aunt Raohncl, and
the story she once told mo Oco day,
when I was about twelve years old, 1 had
planned to go after strawberries, but
Aunt Rachael said to me:
“A girl of your nge should begin to
learn h w to do housework. Take off
your hut, roll up your sleeves, and help
me do the baking.'i
I pouted and sighed and shed tears,
but was encouraged by the promise that
1 might go after the baking. Under
good Aunt Rachel's direction I mixed a
big loaf of bread, and was rubbing the
Hour off my hands when she called out:
“This will never, never do, child; you
havn't scraped your bread bowl clean-”
I shall never forget the picture she
made standing there, her eyes regardin'
mo sternly, one hand resting on her hip,
while in the other she hold tho uutidy
bowl.
“It will never do, child," she wen! on.
“it is not only untidy, but it makes too
much waste; to be a good housekeeper
you must learn to be economical. You
have not heard the story of tlm young
man who wanted an economical wile?’'
“No,” 1 answered, and l might have
added that l didn’t wish to hear it either.
“Well," shocoutinued, “he was a very
likely young man, and he wanted a care
ful wile, so he t bought of a way he could
find one. One morning ho wont to call
upon the different girls of his i rptuin
tance. and asked them lor the scrapings
of their bread bowls to Iced his horse-.
You see they all wanted him, so they got
all they could for him. Finally he found
a girl who hadn’t any, so he asked her to
be bis wife, because he thought she must
be economical. Now, ” said Aunt Rachel
triumphantly, “suppose a young man
should ask you tor the scrapings of your
bread bowl, what could you say?”
"What could I say? 1 repeated scorn
fully, “why, I’d tell him if he couldn’t
afford to buy oats for bis horses they
might starve. I wouldn't rob the pig to
feed them.’’
I supposo Aunt Rachel thought that
lesson was lost on me; but as true as you
live, I never knead the bread to this day
without thinking cf her lesson in econ
omy.
