Thursday, and was picked up by the side
of the railroad Friday morning, almost

At Alupnha, Berrien county, Turner

The mayor put off the trial, aud called on

ment- being delayed, he postponed the
dial several days, and Turner’s friends
dispersed.
The Washington correspondent cf the
Atlanta Constitution says: ‘‘Among the
almost universal calls for the nomination
of Mr Tilden by the Democratic conven
tion, there are occasional les-er hootns lor
other candidates.” We must admit that
we arc Dot investing veiy largely in filden
stock at present. We think the party
could do better than to nomina'e a man
so old, and oue whose northern friends,
while satisfied that he was elected, lacked
the firmness to maintain his rights.
Duiing a very heavy wind last Thurs

alarmed, closed the house, and ran over

sentenced to the penitentiary for three
)egrs for killing a negro who bad testified
against him.
Rev. McDonald preached an able
sermon at Auburn, 111., on the 2d inst.,
and the next night was iri jail lor stealing
a horse and a suit ol clothes after lie
sermon. They were found in his posses
sion.
The lower Missitsippi is rising, and
threatens considerable damage. The
levei s have given way above Vicksburg
and New Orleans, but no serious injury
is reported yot.
At La Fayette, Indiana, Geary, a
Catholic, shot himself. The ebur, h re
fused to have Inin buried in the cemetery.
llis father obtained a counter decree from
the courts, and buried him. Tne church
excommunicated the elder Geary, and
proclaimed the oemetcry desecrated while
Geary's body lay there. There were
threats of moving the body by force, and
a strong guard was kept there.

L. M., wife of it. A. Green, living
between Cedar Bluff and Centre, was
burned to death on the 29th ult.

Ho was sentenced to a lifetime imprison

has just been re-arresied.

the Month” is amply prepared, as an
agriculturist, to pass-safely through that
particular period to which it refers. As
we turn page alter page, wo are de.ighted
with its varied content-, and feel sure
that the man who applies $i in connec
tion with our journal, in payment for a
year’s subscription thereto, makes a wise
and profitable investment.

Dear Brother Loomis:
II I could interest your readers half as
much in things here as I am in wliat takes
pUce with you, 1 might write you an
occasional letter.
The destructive storm of toe 19'h ult.
missed us, tbouf) portions of'he county
suffered greatly.
Farmers say they are behind, hut they
are catching up with their work very fast.
Ii is feared that the oats sowed since
Christmas have ben da" aged by the
cold weather. This will tea great draw
hack to the country.
Within the last few years the real
sugar cane has been raised successfully
here. Nearly every farmer makes his
own syruy, and it is very good- A lew
veur* ago no such thing was though) of
hero. Will the sugar cane, like cotton,
be raised farther and farther nor'h? If
so. it will lake the place of sorghum in
North Georgia after awhile.
It s'ili looks strange to rue to see people
plowing arid planting in fields with no
fence around them.
The cold spell now on us is keeping
hack the fruit, and we are more hopeful
for a good fruit year. Though we are a
long ways Irom Florida, there is a great
deal ol cornu,uniealion between the people
from this pait of Georgia and the people
of Florida. We get oranges fresh Irom
the orange groves, and they are delicious.
Our people here are awake to the
school interesis: there is quite a number
of good schools. The people don’t think
ofdepending on the public schools. This
county is well repre erned in the law
school at Athens, having about a half
dozen law students there, and about twice
that number in the different medical
college*.
In church matters we are moving on
pretty well; all nor home missionary
money was collected and in the hands of
■ lie treasurer a month ago, the church
extension nearly all collected, and a good
siart on the foreign missionary collection.
I hope to have it all up during this
month. My people co operate with me
in these tilings, which helps a great deal.
For instance, a brothel who is pretty
well off, and membership not la ec, -aid,
"I will pay ooe-filili of the missionary
assessment:” another said, “(h uie, let
us raise this money; nickels ami dimes
wont do it; scverul of us must give two
dollars, and others a dollar, and then
Icing your halves, quarters, dimes, and
nickels.”
The young people had a nice entertain
ment at the B .ptist academy on the 29th
nit , hut no danriny. I have been told
that no young lady in Senoia attends
balls, ami a largp numbet of our young
men are consistent members of the
church.
I was glad to see that Summerville wn*
moving in the prohibition hue Your
noble people are obliged to (all into line,
and the sooner the belter.
I married a nieg.,Couple on the 29th,
the day after the agglone. The young
gentleman was from Troup county, w*t

THE NEXT STATE SENATOR.
According to the custom in this state
senatorial district, Chattooga county is
entitled to name the candidate for the
next term. There is, so far as we know,
very little said or done as vet in regard to
this matter. Wo have heard several
prominent citizens of Chattooga county
speak of John W, Maddox as the proba
ble choice of that county. Mr. Maddox
has made a good and efficient member of
the lower house for two terms, and would
be acceptable to Floyd county— Courier.
