Unequal protection cannot b • justified.
If protection onhincett tbe value of tbe
prod not a of one man more Ilian another,
the lalter has a (rood ground of com
plaint. Manufacturer* genera'ly clamor
lor protection, that they may get more
for their goods. Cotton, corn and wheat
Cannot bo protected, because this country
raises more than it needs, and haa n
surplus to export. No tariff hat the wit
of man can devise will add one cent to the
prioo of these urticlcs. The producers
thereof aro unjustly treated il the govern
men! imposes a lav which raises the price
of what they have to buy more than the
additional demand for their products to
feed operatives in factories started in this
country by the encouragement of the
tariff will enhance wl at they liuve to sell.
Any attempt to settlo permanently a
question in which so many interests are
involved, must he unsuccessful, for w! en
any interest is for a time depressed, more
protection will he called for.

turned Iroin tbe house and the wondering
group at the door, and went in search of
my lest fair ones. It seemed that in
ascending a steep hill the box had
loosened and slid off so rapidlv that when
the ladies disco ered their situation 1 was
too far ahead, and the noise of . the bells
drowned their voices. Tiresn iw was too
deep for them to waik through, and there
the discorsolates sat sometime, chided
through with cold, their only amusement
abusing trie. To complete their u ortifi
cation, a party of young gentlemen -of
their acquaintance soon after came up,
and, not recognizing them at first, set up
a shout of laughter at their ridiculous j
situation. These gentlemen took them !
home, where I found them. Miss H :
