NEW YORK’S RACE
BADLY MIXED.
But McClellan is Sure, to be Re-
or.
The Action of the Republican* in En
dorsing Jerome has Put the Manag
ers at Sea—Cleveland Endorses
McClellan—The Effect of Hearst’s
Race for Mayor.
(From Wednesday's Daily.)
The betting:
Three and a half to 1 on McClellan.^
Four to 1 against Jerome, with a few
bets at even money.
Even money Hearst gets 125,000 vote?.
New York, Nov 1.—-Former Presi
dent Grover Cleveland lias announced
his support of George B. McClellan for
mayor »>ud sounded a summons for all
men who owe fealty to the democratic
party. His letter is pronounced by men
wise in politics as one of the strongest
can.paign pronouncements ever issued,
The Tammany leaders, upon hearing
the news, becamo highly elated and de
clared that now the former president
had cast his influence in the scales all
was over but the shouting.
It is interesting to note that while in
the old days the Tammany organization
under leadership of Richard Oroker, was
bitterly anti-Cleveland, it' has changed
front completely #and the ex-president
was the choice of Leader Murphy for
the presidential nomination in 1904
when Judge Parker was nominated at
St. Louis.
The political gossip today centered
about the action of the republicans in
indorsing Jerome, as far as it is possible
to indorse him, for it^is still a doubtful
question as to whether it is possible to
substitute the name of Jorome as a can
didate for district attorney at this late
date iy the place of Flammer. This
Flammer-Jerome business praotically
demoralized all political headquarters
today and no one seems to know what
will happen next.
Jerome’s friends are moving heaven
and earth in efforts to indace the muni
cipal league voters to support the ores-
ent district attorney instead of Shearn,
but up to the present, owing to the pow
erful labor opposition, the disposition
appears to be to stand by Shearn.
Never before in the history of the
oity, has a political situation been more
mixed. Hearst and Jerome have "but
ted into the game,” the former as an
independent municipal ownership can
didate, the latter as nn independent in
dividualistic candidate. As a general
thing, men who "butt into games” here
in New York get "butted out” again,
The cold, hard facts in the case are that
conditions are changing almost every
hour, but the betting—always the best
criterion in New Pork elections—points
to the triumph of McClellan without a
doubt.
