John R. Cooper Says he Will Take the
Matter to United States Supre
Court at Once—Says he Will Win
Before the Higher Courts.
John R. Cooper, attorney
Rawlings, who have been convicted
of tho murder of the Carter children
at Valdosta and who have been refus
ed a new trial by the supremo court
of Georgia, announces that he is go
ing to take the case to the United
States supreme court and will file
1, petition for a writ of error with
the supreme court in a few days.
According to Mr. Cooper,
> clients have not had a fair trial and
ho proposes to go bofore the highest
court in the land before he gives up
the fight. The supreme court Wed
nesday handed down a decision which
sealed the fate of old man Rawlings
and his two sons Milton and Jesse,
Leonard Rawlings ,it wll be remem
bered was given a life sentence,
while the others are sentenced to
be hanged.
The opinion of the supreme court
in the case is a very exhaustive one,
and goes at length Into the case. All
the rulings of Judge Mitchell, who
presided while the case was being
tried in the superior court have been
afflrmed. Frank Turner one of the
negroes who was sent up for life
was given a now trial.
It is expected that Attorney Coop
er will reach Valdosta in a short
while and will take up matters regard
lng these cases with his clients and
the other attorneys with him in the
defense.
In the meantime, It is understood
*that Solicitor Thomas will continue
to fight the sinte’s battle with un
wavering Interest both as regards the
case of Frank Turner, tho Rawlings
and others who liavo been implicated
In these cases.
