What the Negro is Doing.
W. A. Allen, colored, furnishes the
following to show the relation of the
negroes to American progress.
American civilization was hardly
born when the negro, a stranger, was
Introduced at Jamestown, Va., iu

When the culture of tobacco be
came the chief industry of the colo

factor in its production, and since
then he has been a wonderful factor,

country during the past two yearn.
The spid r is a minute yellowish-red

of the plant.
The report says the pest is very prob

in injurious numbers has not been re
ported until the summer of 1908, when
it caused considerable damage to cotton

M. W. Savage, of Minneapolis, the
owner of the world’s greatest horse
Dan Patch, stipulates in all of his
racing contracts that no betting, pool
selling nor liquor selling is to bo
permitted at any track where Dan
Patch paces When he was offered
$3,000 recently fo^ waiving that stip
ulation for one day at the Delman
Park races, St. Louis, Mr. Savage tel
egraphed a reply which bids fair to
become famous: “Sorry, - but Bair
Patch joined the Methodist church
two years ago” Mr Savage was In
earnest so far as Methodism is con
cerned, for whatever Dan may think
about backsliding and revivals and
fast living, his owner, Mr. Savage,
is a consistent and highly respected
member of the church. He is doing
a great work for racing, in making
It respectable and honest.
Mr. Savage brought the Canadians
to time by Insisting that Dan Patch
should not pace at Toronto unless he
was given assurance and a bond guar
anteeing that there Rhould be no li
quor selling or betting allowed at
the track. The Toronto Board of
Control agreed with Mr. Savago and
ordered the track closed because the
Toronto Driving Club openly allowed
betting and bookmaking.
