hardly available. It was sab] a sup
plementary statement would be Is
sued, bringing figures up to October
first.
Figures show that between June
28, 1902, and June 30 of this year
there have been spent four million
dollars. It is therefore apparent that
since July ’ there have been expend
ed more than five million dollars. Of
this amount $1,300,000 was spent for
ships. In other words whereas the
rate of expenditure prior to July 1
was about a hundred thousuand dol
lars a month It Jumped to more than
a mlllon dollars a month and by th
statements of those connected witl
fhe commission, It is likely to jump
higher.
Although the statement given out
today is not. rich in information, and
much of the fact is concealed under
perfunctory headings, it makes evi
Ident that at least. $800,000 of the four
millions accounted for was spent In
salaries and office and travelling ex
penses and supplies incident to office
work. Obviously this Is not the total
sum, for such labels as Sanitation,
$208,651; Hospitals and Asylums,
$160,862; Canal Construction, $694,-
292, and Material, Supplies and Equip
meat J?iu2cha*e*r-#ifO#T,7in; tmisf In
clude still further sums which should
be added to the salary account.
Theodore P, Shonts, chairman of
the commission, was represented In
today's Herald, through an error, as
having said affairs had come to a
point where be would retire unless he
wns clothed with full power and made
accountable only to the president.
Mr. Shonts* only statement In re
sponse to inquiries that he had said
he would resign under such condi
tions was that this was true and that
his position had not changed since
he accepted the chairmanship of the
commission
Mr. Shonts took occasion today tc,
declare that reports of friction be
tween himself and Secretary Taft
were groundless. Such reports havo
been heard from various quarters in
the last fortnight. In the canal com
mission's office it was said Mr. Taft
ami Mr. Shonts had a full understand

There was a bridge about a mile down

“Oh, well,” said Colonel Roosevelt,
