FOR A BIG CHAIR
FACTORY.
to Secure a Large En-
Mr. John R Dortch of Franklin
County is Here and Will Meet the
Business Men Tomorrow Afternoon
at the City Halt at Four O’clock.
All Should Attend.
(From Wednesday’s Daily.
1 Valdosta has the Opportunity of
securing a large chair factory, pro
vided the business men show some
interest In the concern.
““ Jvlr. John R. Dorch, of Franklin
county. Is In Valdosta today looking
over the field and wllY remain here
until tomorrow night.. lie has a
propositi**" and a guarantee to sub
ir.it to the people hcfe that may
li* an much for them.
.Mr. Dortch has been In the busi
ness and fully understands It. He
li’.es In a section where factories of
this character have done well, but
he is convinced that a section like
this where the demand for furniture
Is great would be a better location.
He docs not want any free sites
or donations, but ho has a plain bus
iness proposition to submit to the
people of Valdosta. He is a business
man of considerable Interests and
will not be in the city longer than to*
morrow. j
A large crowd should turn out to- 1
morrow afternoon and hear his prop
osition.
The Meeting Yesterday Afternoon. 1
The i-oard of trade met at the city
hall yesterday afternoon, for the pur

A BAD WRECK ON A. C. L.
Two Men Killed and Another Not
Expected to Recover From Injuries
Saturday evening a serious wreck
occurred on the A. C. L. near the
Itchtucknee River. It seems that
the section hands were at work in
the cut just this side of the bridge
when a freight train came along, and
they stepped off on the embankfnent
while the train passed. Just at this
time a flange of one car wheel broke
and the cars were piled upon eaqh
other , burying the section men m
the debris. It was impossible for
them to escape owing to the high
banks.
Immediately steps were taken to
relieve the entombed men. M. C.
Twails, a white man, was first res
cued, but he died soon after. One
negro, who was compelled to under
go an amputation of both legs, died
soon after, and another who had one
leg cut off. Is not expected to live..
Details of the afTair are unobtainable
at this writing.
Young Twails was a nephew op
Mrs. Joe Dickerson and Mrs. W.
L. Austin, of this city, and these la!tV
ihfe left for Branford this morning to
attend the funeral.
A wrecking train, with surgeons
aboard, was sent there, and the track
loared Sunday, but another wreck
of four freight cars near Marlon Sta
tion Sunday blocked the track again
and the north-bound passenger train
compelled to go over the short
line from Fort White to Lake City,
thence over the G. S. & F. to Jas

IN A HURRY TO HANG.
“Don’t Put It off Any Longer Than
You Can Help’’ Pleads Murderer
Coudersport* FV?b. 28—“Don’t put
It off any longer than you can help,
wish It had happened two weeks
o,” said Charles Brewster, the con
demned murderer, when the death
warrant was read to him In the Jail
late yesterday.
Brewster is sentenced to be hang
ed March G. The scaffold, completed
yesterday, is built on the “sawhuck”
*»lan and arranged to life the con
demned man into the air Instead of
letting him drop through a trap,
discussing and taking action I Fist now it Is the object of much
toward securing a number of new curiosity. It stands in the opea b*-
enterprises .for the city. j hln 1 » ,K " "- wi "’ r ‘' Hundreds of poo.
The meetlni; was noi largely at-! Plo visit It dally
tended, but It made up in enthusiasm I
what it lacked in attendance. J
O. Presspich, who is now In Val-
ijosta to present to the people a prop*
osition for the erection of a canning
factory was at the meeting and laid
the proposition before the members
preset!’. It was unqualifiedly endors
ed and nearly one-fourth of the nec
essary stock was subscribed by the
small number of business men pres
ent. Thv>se who have become Inter
ested in the enterprise are satisfied
that the canning factory Is decldely
one of the best things for the town
and country that Valdosta has had
presented to her in many days and
it is not believed there will be a par
ticle of trouble. In securing the nec*
essarv subscriptions to the stock.
The railroad situation was also dis
cussed. and it was the sense of the
meeting that the city should aid In
every possible way towards securing
the new road which John Skelton
Williams and his associates are
heading this way from Augusta.

GREAT JOY IN SAVANNAH.
Savannah, Feb. 28—There Is joy
among the fans; the sun Is shining

pretty girls who like to hear the swat
of the hickory against the pigskin
sphere are in ecstacy: the small boy
why plays truant to get to so,. a game

COLD WAVE CAME
AT LAST.
Mercury in Thermometers Reached
Two Degrees Below Freezing.
Coldest Weather of fteason at This
Point this Morning—Opinions Dif
fer as to Whether Damage is Done
to Crops or Not.
(From Wednesday’s Dally.
The heavy wlnJ that was blowing
night before last and yesterday
brought a cold wave in its trail, the
mercury dropping two degrees
low the freezing point last night.
'The air,,woe dry and ty.is* not
Hcved that vegetables or Truft sfff-
fered much by the freeze, though
opinions differ on this..as they do on
almost all other questions.
About the first bunch of men the
reporter saw this morning were four
well known citizens, who pride them
selves :is being authorities on farm
ing an 1 alt matters pertaining there
to.
“The oat crop is as dead as a door
nail,’’ said one of them, “the freeze
has put It entirely out of business.
It is the coldest weather we have
haJ this winter, the ground is frozen
for the first time and Is harder than
I have seen It In two years. Of cours w
the oatcrop and all kinds of fruits
are killed.”
Every man in the crowd agreed
with what he said. They could see
no hope at all for any kind of vegp*
tiTtlon after such • a freeze. They
quoted Henry Boyd and other well
known farmer* to back up what they
said. % ,'
The reporter went on down to
ward the court house and met up
\fith former Ordinary D. M. SmlCb
J: D. Wlsenbaker and other authori
ties on agriculture/ ^They if ere also
discussing the weather and the
freeze. Judge Smith was tolling
about picking up a piece of Ire in
his horse trough and puffing it out
in the sun, and that it tool: It. ton
minutes to melt even a liulo bit. j
The reporter asked what off. *-’ ,
the freezo wou]«l have on the o.
crop and Qie answer came in a cm
rus from several in the party:
“Ffne.it thing thar could ’nappe
,to it. Oats would not have b*e
worth gathering if it had not bee:
for this freeze. You see they neoi
some cold weather to toughen ’en
and tills is just what they wantel
Fruit? Ji ain’t hurt a bit. It Is Jus
cold enough to make It tough so t
will stand the next freeze that come
along.”
And.so !t. goes. There are peopl
who. take different views of almos
every happening that comes alma
but It takes, all of them to give in
spice of variety to human life.
