1,000 Feet of Hose and 'Saved the
Bdilding.
(From Thursday's Daily.-
The new fire department made a
run this morning of which they have
right “to—be- proud, and
work after reaching the fire that will
stand out boldly to their . credit.
It was about three o'clock when
the fire alarm was turned In from a
box in the extreme western portion
of the city. The fire was ov.er
/one thousand feet beyond the old
Georgia Southern depot and just that
much beyond the last water main
In that section of the city.
in order to reach the fire, the
department had to lay one thousand
feet of hose. They made the run In
a phenomenally quick time and they
saved the building with the excep
tion of part of the kitchen and roor.
The glow of the flames could be seen
entirely across the city, but the glow
quickly died out, showing that the
firemen had conquered them.
There were several houses close
to the one that was on fire and it
required good work to save these,
but the use of water and chemicals
quickly put the flames unJer control.
The house was occupied by a wid
ow woman, Mrs. Parker, and her
daughter, Mrs. Parker being very ill
at the time. * She had to be moved
out on a cot.
It Is not known how the fire start"
ed, but it Is probable that lt was
caused from the stove or fire place,
a fire being necessary on account of
her illness.
There were two different alarms
turned in, while the engine at sever
al of the plants in that section gave
distress signals, which added to the
din and made many people fear that
a more seridus conflagration was rag
ing.
