TINY SLOOP’S LONG RACE
To Compete In First Contest
Over the Pacific Ocean.
SHE WILL BEPBESEHT HAWAII
La Pnlomtt, Which Will Race From
San Francisco to Hoaolala, Coaid
Be Carried on Deck of Bis Yacht*.
Owner* of Competing Craft and
Their Gncsti to Be Royally Enter-

On the high seas, between Honolulu
and San Francisco', is a small sloop
wending her way across the Pacific to
try to race back to Hawaii with the
greatest yachting laurels of the west
ern ocean, says the New York World.
She is La Paloma, owned by Charles
W. McFarlane of the Hawaii Yacht
dub.
When the ocean race from the Gold
en Gate to the famous islands far out
in the Pacific was projected Hawnii-
ans saw a chance for a great sporting
victory on the sea, and a craft was
sought to represent them. There was
La Paloma, which had won race after
race at home. But could she stand the
stress of 2,100 miles of sea? Her own
er thought so uud entered her in the
race.
Yachtsmen on this side of the conti
nent would ridicule the Idea of so
small a craft, attempting such a voy
age, especially in racing trim. She is a
mere pygmy compared with the great
Atlantic, which wou the oceau race
from Saudy Hook to the Lizard last
May, and could be carried ou the decks
of most of the vessels In that contest.
But she is a seaworthy little craft and
despite her size is worrying the Cali
fornia yachtsmen, who are not sure
but the honor of winning the first
yacht race across the Pacific will go to
the little boat and her daring owner.
Commodore H. H. Sinclair of the
San Francisco Yacht club was the first
to realize the possibilities of the prize
going away from the coast and enter
ed his schooner Lurline In the contest
On her are based the hopes of the Cali
fornia yachtsmen.
There is another yacht in the race,
however, which those in the east be
lieve will prove faster than all the
others. She is the Anemone, owned
by C. L. Tutts. She will fly the flag of
the New York Yacht club. John Mur*

Washington, May. 2—The dainty so
ciety women of All Souls' Unitarian
dhurch have been raising money for
the benefit of San Francisco’s earth
quake and fire sufferers by shining
men's shoes and Inserting laces.
They arrived prepared for the task
and each wore a becoming suit of
black calico, a jaunty cap and had
brush in hand. Each man who look
ed like a customer was greeted with:
‘TIave a shine? It’s only a dime.”
Business was brisk from the start.
It was the practice not to return

Schools Receive More Money.
State School Commissioner Mer
ritt has just sent out to the various
counties of the state $140,000. This
is the second disbursement of the
state school funds which has been
made this spring, $62,00u having been
paid out earlier in the week. Next
week another substantial disburse
ment will be made to the various
counties. A part of this sura will be
utilized, for paying up balances for
the year 1905.
Governor Terrell has notified Com
missioner Merritt that by the middle
of May 35 per cent of the whole ap
portionment for the year 1906 will be
available, or a total of $607,000.
