Marshal shot and killed Albert Tomp
kins in the lower part of the county,
about seven miles from Boston.
Neison Marshall was tried and con
victed of drawing a pistol on Tomp
kins, and Tompkins was the prosecu
tor in the case.
Marshall was convicted, but his
attorney, Theodore Titus, gave no
tice that he would carry the matter
to the higher court. Sentence was
suspended and Marshall was. released
on bond.
The next day after the trial Mar
shall Is reported to have gone to
Tompkins’ home and to have stolen

adversary while the latter was work-

Marshall forthwith proceeded to the
field and shot him down with his

Big Land Deal In Brooks.
Messrs. A. C. McLeod and O. K.

Iwhereby th(tf came into possession
■of the Wade land Just north of town.
■The tract consists of about 400 acres
i and the price paid was 910,000.
It is understood that the purchas

and that they will have it laid oil
Into lots and offer them for sale.
They have made a proposition to
the city authorities offering them a
tract of five or six acres for a park,
provided that the town will extend
North Court street on through the

patter.

The Dog’s Trip on the Car Truck.
Sheriff Passmore and Mr. Abial
Varnedoe went to Mllledgeville yes
terday morning with E. A. Stephens,
who was recently adjudged a subject
for the state sanitarium.
Upon their return this morning
they tell a story that would hardly
be believed, were it not for the fact
that both of them have a reputation
of never deviating one Jot or tittle-
from the truth. They say that yester
day morning when the train arrived
at Cordele it was pouring down rain
and as the train left the station for
Macon a large shepherd dog Jumped
upon the truck under one
coaches and remained there until
the train reached Macon. The dog
was ousted from his perch two or
three times between Cordele and
Macon, but he would immediately
return and held his place until
train reached the car shed at the
end of the line. He then Jumped
down and ran off through the crowd
out into the city.
Old railroad men who witnessed
the dog’s feat declare that they had
never seen anything like it before.

Lifting. • 8«f« to tht Window.
A crowd of workmen were busily
engaged in lifting a huge Iron safe
to a window of the fourth story of
the McKey buifding thte morning.
The safe was being lifted, by means
of a block and tackle and carried
through one of the windows. It was
so heavy that it could not be carried
upon the elevator and this novel
method was adopted of carrying it
to its future resting place. The safe
belonged to the Mutual Benefit Life
Insurance Company, of this city,
which has changed its office to the
McKey building.
A large crowd stood on the ground
and watched the big iron vault easi
ly move heavenward.
Mrs. Susan Dent Dies In Atlanta.
Mrs. Susan Dent, mother of Jas.
J. Dent of the Herald force, died in
Atlanta last week. She had been
in poor health for a year or more,
suffering from diabetes, and about a
month ago she was taken to a hos
pital in Atlanta for expert treatment.
Drs. Fisher and Davis, two of the
most eminent physicians of Atlanta,
gave her special attention, but she
gradually grew worse until the end
came Thursday afternoon. Her re
mains will be brought to Nashville
for interment.—Herald.

Since the South consumes more
pork than all other meats combined,
the subject of its profitable produc
tion is a most important one, and
worthy of investigation. All root
crops do well in this part of Geor
gia, and instead of buying pork from
the west, we should every year raise
a surplus.
Ten years ago ninety per cent of
the pork consumed in the south was
raised in the west, and paid for at
an exhorbltant price with low price
cotton. Now the greater portion,
perhaps, is home grown, and all of
it should be.
The information below is from
Mr. Tracy’s nstructive pamphlet:
“The economical and profitable pro
duction of pork requires that the
feed should be palatable, nutritious
and inexpensive. No one kind of
feed can be used exclusively with
profit for feeding pigs, breeding ani
mals, and fattening hogs, and no one
feed will continue to be as palatable
i variety of feeds. It should be
the object of every hog raiser to in
duce his animals to eat as much as
possible and the greater variety the
greater will he the amount of feed
consumed.—The Tattnail Journnl.
