Attorney for J. 0. Rawlings—Plan
to Remove Prlsonere.
We print below a card from Sheriff
Passmore replying to some rather se
vere criticisms from Attorney Coop
er. Below his article we publish the
Interview that appeared in the Au
gusta Chronicle and Macon Evening
News
To the Citizens of Lowndes Coun
ty:—My attention has been called to
an article In the Macon Evening
News and .Augrusta Chronicle, pur
porting to be an Interview with J.
R. Cooper, attorney for the Raw
lingses, which requires an answer
from me. He gives notice that a re
quest will be made for their removal
from the Jail here on account of the
treatment given them by the sheriff.
I wish to say that f have treated Mr.
Rawlings as well as he would allow
me to treat him. his statement and
Cooper's statement to the contrary,
notwithstanding.
The last time Col. Cooper went to
the Jail lie wanted me to take Raw
lings and his boys out of the cell
I told him that I would take out the
hoys, but would not take out the old
man. the old man being unruly at
times, and because Cooper was work-
ing for a new trial for the hoys and
not tlie old man.
Cooper states that the letter he re
ceived from Rawlings was a pitiful
one: that Rawlings said the ibeiflfl
never let an opportunity pass -jo 4n-
noy him. This Is not true H the
J
good citizens know. Rawlings' Bay
that he has been compelled to sleep
on the same cot ever since last July.
That Is true and if he remains in
ten years longer he may continue t'o
sleep on It unless the commissioners
provide new ones. The little Carter
children have slept In the same place
since last July, too. Rawlings says

Whiskey for the money that you have ever
bought before. All I ask of you Is to give me
a trial. 1 keep all Brandies for medical pur
poses. That's all. You will find me at
US North Ashley Street.
Louis Lippman,
Valdosta, Ga,
This is true, but the chief need of InU
provement is in the hands of Mr.
jRawlings. He hns water, soap and
towels provided for him, but it is
known that lie has not used them in
six months. The* only strict meas
ure that has been adopted toward Mr.
Rawlings was In an attempt to make
him bathe and put on clean clothing
Cooper’s statement that I have
done all that 1 could to make It un
comfortable for Rawlongs and his
boys have given me very little trouble
he has not confidence in me as an
official, but I expect that he has more
confidence In me than I have in him.
Old mau Rawlings has given me
more trouble than any prisoner I
have ever had to contend with. The
boy have given me very little trouble.
It Is generally known that the
pickpockets offered as high as $2,700
for their liberty while they were pris
oners here and old man Rawlings has
also made the offer of a good sum to
get out. My Judgment Is that Coop
er’s reason for wanting them moved
is in order to work the Insanity dodge
a little better and In order to im
prove their chances of getting away.
Cooper says in his Interview that I
have been on the state’s side all of
the way through the cdse. I have
only done my duty as I saw it. I be
lieve that if guilty thef ought to be
punished and if innocent they should
go free. Mr. Cooper’s wily tactics
at playing with technicalities and do
ing other “sharp” things to cause a
“delay In the law’’ probably accounts
for the suspicious eye which he casts
toward me. It is said that the evil
man thinks evil of his neighbor.
Very respectfully,
J. F. PASSMORE.
(From Tuesday’* Daily.)
The baseball world here is iu a
very tangled state of affairs. Whether
the Ghf.rgia State League will close
tomorrow so far as Valdosta is con
cerned cannot be foretold. The man
agement of the club does not know,
the players are likewise at sea and
th^ writer himself confesses igno
rance. Only time will tell. The Val
dosta bunch are In a very demoraliz
ing condition as their back salaries
are long past due and they are clam
oring for the coin. Their board is to
be payed and without a little money
they can hardly keep on their feet.
This money is due them from tho
former management and on that ac
count it seems that the present own
ers are not straining themselves in
an effort to pay it. However along
that line a few words edgeways here
will not be amiss. The rules of the
National Association of Professional
Baseball Clubs, of which Valdosta is
a full-fledged member, says that no
transfer of a club is legal unless all
salaries due players are paid, or the
parties to whom the sale Is made,
upon accepting the franchise become
equally liable for any and all amounts
past and due the players of said
club. But if the local moguls can
not pay those salaries they can’t,
and that’s all there is to it.
The players claim that they have
been promised their money so often
and in such good faith that they have
become discouraged and are ready to
quit. Added to this they say that
the reason their work has been so
careless and indifferent Is because
the fans of Valdosta will go out to
the park and roast them for making
errors the same as if they drew large,
cy wads regularly ^W^he first and
wiicr "fir ^Mtffr^DTrg -tn
two of the players have jobs here in
town and unless something Is doing
right away in the financial line they
say that the ball field will be desert
ed for a business where payments are
more regular. Several of them have
offers from other towns to come and
play ball and nre only waiting here
to see if anything is going to be done
&n^ something must be done and
very shortly, too.
Waycross is here today and will
play today and two games tomorrow
If matters are adjusted so the Val-
dota quad will play.
Catcher Curran, secured from Sa

are being kept hot no word can be

Macon, June 2S—In response to a
piteous appeal from old man J. G.
Rawllugs in which he says he is be-

I ty Attorney John R. Cooper today
| made application to Judge Robert G.
Mitchell to have the Rawlings prison-
removed from the Jail in Valdos-
14 Citizens Raised $',400.
Mayor John Roberts invited a few
citizens to meet with him at the city
ball last night and fourteen were on
hand to see what he wanted. He
explained to them that he was inter
ested in the movement to build a
Y. M. C. A. building here and asked
if they would not contribute to the
cause.
The subscription list was opened
and in a few minutes fourteen hun
dred dollars was raised. The meet
ing lasted about fourteen minutes.
too.
Today Attorney Cooper received a
letter from old mau Rawlings, and
the tale he told was a pitiful one.
He declared the high sheriff of the
county never allows an opportunity
to pass to annoy and harass him and
that he has been compelled to sleep
on the same cot ever since last July.
The old man says the sanitary con
ditions at the jail make his stay tliere
almost unbearable, and he declares'
he would rather die .and go to hell
than remain there any longer.
Attorney Cooper accordingly took
the matter up at once with Judge
Mitchell and asked" that official to
transfer the old mau and his boys to
dither Savannah or Macon.
That Passmore has done all in his
power to make it uncomfortable for
RawNngs every since he has had the
old man locked 'has been the
claim of the defense all along. Attor
ney Cooper declares that Passmore
would not let Rawlings come out of
his cell for a conference.
as compelled.” says Attorney
Cooper, “to consult him through
the bars of his cage, with a gang of
pickpockets listening.’'
The time set for the old man's exe
cution is July 13, but as the appeal
for the boys will not be heard before
the state supreme court until July 16
and as the old man is needed as a
witness for the boys in case the
high court grants them a new trial.
Attorney Cooper will, within a short
time, ask Governor Terrell to respite
him. 1
