haa been reported in that section in
a long time.
The meetings have been held un
der the ausplcieB ol a new sect
in that part of the country. For
the want ol a better name some
people have irreverently called them
“Holy Rollers," "Holy Jumpers,"
and other names of that kind. It is
probable, however, that the new
sect are the Ponacostals, who have
been holding meetings' throughout
this section (or several years and
who claim the "gift of tongues,” or
the ahllity at times to speak in “un
known tongues" as a result of what
they call the “move of the spirit.”
Be that as it may, the recent meet
ings in the neighborhood of Melrose
and Jennings are said to have
wrought wonders among some of
the old sinners of that section. It Is
said that the evangelist who was con
ducting the services put the congre
gation on notice that there could be
no conversion without confession and
restitution. Sinners were told that
they could not get Into the Kingdom
of God halt sinners and half saints.
They had to make a clean sweep In
order to be saved. The result of the
meetings was that many people who
have been at outs with their neigh

Bptt, Quit, Fit
Hines, Ala.—In a letter from this
place, Mrs. Eula Mse Bradley eays:
“I used to spit up all I ate. I was
tired and sleepy all the time. My
head ached, and I could hardly drag
around. Since taking Cardul, this
has entirely quit and now I feel quite
fit." Mrs. Bradjey suffered from her
vous Indigestion. Cards! builds sp
tbs nervous system, and strengthens
the womanly constitution. That’s
why Cardul helped Mrs Bradley and
why It will help poo. Try It
shurley, und accompanied by a 17-
year-old girl whom he la alleged to
have run away with from Klsslmee,
Fla., waa arrested on the train at
Adel this morning on the strength
of telephone advices from this city,
it Is expected that the couple will
be brought back to Valdosta this af
ternoon to face serious charges. The
arrest was made by chief of police
Hall of Adel, the message requesting
the detention of the couple rescu
ing him Just a few minutes be
fore the north bound train on the
Georgia Southern & Florida rail
road, ou which they were passen
gers, arrived there.
The couple reached Valdosta from
Palatka at 10.30 last night and went
to the Central Hotel, where the
man registered as A. J. Sherley and
daughter. They spent the night
there and thin morning boarded the
North bound Georgia Southern
Florida train at 11 o'clock.
A telephone message waa recelvea
by Chief of Police Dampier yester
day afternoon, from H. C. Sheppard,
an attache of the sheriff's office In
Osceola County, Fla,, asking him to
keep a lookout for the man and girl
as it was expected they would come,
to this city. In a short while after
tbe train arrived here an officer call
ed at the hotel and acquainted Mr.
Sweat, the proprietor, with the mes
sage received from tbe Florida depu
ty. Mr. Sweat did not know wheth
er the-couple who bad come to bla
place were the fieoplojuiltedor not,
but this morning hs beoamt-oon-
vtneed that they were.
- Mr. Sheppard, tbs Florida officer
who had been following the man and
girl from Kissimmee, reached the
city at 10:30 this morning, but by
tbe time he got up town and con
sulted the hotel proprietor and the
officers here the couple had taken
the train from some other point
Mr. Sweat then swore out a warrant,
and deputy sheriff Parrish cslled up
the Adel officers and asked him to
take tbe man and girl In charge
when the train reached there.
The officers state that Sherley
apparently became suspicious this
morning, and seemed to fear that he
was being pursued. Proprietor
Sweat, of the hotel, kept him con
stantly In sight until he and the girl
bonrded the train, and so close was
this surveillance that the man
would not buy tickets, seeming to
think he would thus have a better
show of eluding pursuit
Sherley Is a middled aged man,
and has a family at Kissimmee. The
girl with- him Is barely seventeen
years old, and Is verf pretty and In
telligent looking. She Is the daugh
ter of a loading turpentine operator,
and her family Is a prominent one In
that eectlon of Florida. Her par
ents have been notified of her deten
tion, nnd It Is expected that they
will come to Valdosta tonight. Just
what steps will be taken efter their
arrival ts not known, but It Is prob
able tb&t Sherley will be charged
with kidnapping. It Is said that a
reward of fifty dollars was offered
for the arrest of the couple.

That Labor is Worse,
INVESTIGATION OF LAWS IS PHO.
POSED BY THE LUMBER MEN
TO BELIEVE HHORTAG OF

Lumber market conditions are
very unsatisfactory, except for shin
gles, laths, staves and the lower
grades of flooring; labor conditions,
already at the limit oC endurance,
are growing worse: there is no an
tagonism between the lumber man.
ufacturers and the railroads, but c
disposition on both sides to amicably
adjust any differences that may
urlse.
These facts were developed at the
meeting of the Georgla-Florlda Saw-
mil; Association at Atlantic Beach,
Fla. Features of Interest were the
unanimous re-election of Secertary
Harrell, the election of Arthur’ H
Cummer, of Jacksonville, as treas
urer, and the direction that the office
of secretary be moved from Tifton
to Jacksonville at the option of the
president, wore the principal events
at the June meeting of the Georgla-
Florlda Sawmill Amoclatlon, which
convened at the Continental Hotel,
Atlantic Beach, Fla., with a large
attendance.
The special committee to which
was referred the proposed advance
In freight rates to lower Ohio river
crossings, reported that they had
agreed to recommend to the regular
meeting of the association that they
would agree to the proposed advance,
provided this section was not dis
criminated against. In other words,
any advance In rates from the Oeor-
gla-Florida Association territory
must ibe s portion of a general ad
vance from all other lumber manu
facturing points. It Is not known
whether any other woods than yel
low pine would be effected. The re
port was received and agreed to and
tbe committee continued.
This wag regarded hs Indicating

of actual interest-and-mske-caneesJ
slops'where the situation warranted,
ard that any feelings of antagolsm
that might have existed between the
railroads ad yellow pine manufacur-
ers had disappeared.
The delegates to the National
Lumber Manufacturers’ Association
reported on the proceedings of that
meeting. These delegates were J.
B. Conrad, William B. Stllwell, F.
B. Waymer and H. M. Graham.
Tlie secretary read a letter from
Ibe Aycock Lumber Co., of Ay-
cock, Fla., Inclosing a circular which
had been thrown from a train pass
ing their mill, offering Inducements
to laborers. It was also reported
(lmt there was some recruiting
among the sawmill men, and this
was severely condemned as having a
tendency to exaggerate tbe condi
tions already bad.
A committee of five. consisting of
J. B. Conrad, chairman; F. E. Way
mer and C. E. Melton, of Florida;
G. M. Graham and T. S. Price, of
Georgia, was appointed to Investi
gate labor conditions In these states
anil confer with the authorities of
(lit different towns and counties In
which sawmills are located request
ing a more rigid enforcement of the
vagrancy laws. The Georgia law will
he Investigated to see If It can be
Improved.
A rather startling statement was
made that there are from 100 to 200
Idle negroes In nearly every town
wnere s sawmill Is located, and that
In Jacksonville there are nearly
3,000 loafing on the streets or around
the barrooms, supported 'by women.
