Atlanta, July 26.—Tlila veracious
plcca of current history begins In a

In tb. Georgia court of appeals. It
lnrolres moo-cows and constitu
tional law.
In Miller county thero lived, and
at the period when this chronicle
opens each rejoiced in tho possession
of a cow.
It wan the custom of these fire
farmers to pasture their live cows
In a common herd, in a pleasant hit
of meadowlsnd lying out of sight of
the Tillage DehlLo a ridge of pine
tree*. t
So far as the supreme court rec
ords show, the fire cows lived a
tranquil and bucolic existence In the
tnaadow until one evening Duncan
Dtan, known to his friends ss
‘‘Dune," and to the Impartial offi
cers of the law he a thief, happened
Into that particular pasture.
He stole the whole herd. That Is
not a conjecture, but recorded fact.
He didn't get far with the live cows,
however, before the five farmers
were on the trail. They have bcea

Dunesn Dean, not knowing any

managed, however, to hire a law

good lawyer, for aoon Duncan Dean

didn't seam to know the meaning,

convicted Dean for eteallng cow

Then the lawyer took tho case to

Washington, July 28.—Without
expectation of accomplishing awy re
sult beyond the exchange of views,
the Democratic senators went Into
caucus at 8 o’clock tonight to con
sider wool tariff legislation. They
were much divided on the question.
Probably the most startling de
velopment was the discovery In the
early afternoon that there HtC a
possibility of the paassage of the
house wool bill through the aid of
Insurgent Republican votes. The re-
rort to that affect became' current
through expressions of Senator
Poindexter, of Washington, an In
surgent who Is friendly to tho house
bill, and the discovery created con
sternation on tho Republican side
of the chamber.
In • False Position.
There was an Immediate canvas
of tho situation and It was found
that some of those, mentioned as fa
vorable to the house bill had been
placed in a false position. Three
or four of the Insurgents were
found to have said that they would
accept the house bill. If no other
measure could be passed, but, so
far as could be determined, the
number was not sufficient Jo Insure
favorable action, and by nightfall
