MACON BRFDGE.
Mi*. Editor.—1 last week inquired tiirnugli
i vcnir columns into the condition of the Macon
j Bridge’ and what prospect there was Of its being
* rebuilt. Au inquiry .was, also made, why the oh!
| Bridge was not repaired instead of incurring the
j eosi and delay of a new one? Instead ol rcply-
! ing io these queries, which are all very natural
and proper, bis honor the Mayor in a short ill na-
tured article signed no "I’otch Work,” treats the
subject with ridicule, and ends by recommending
Inquirer.to suspend himself from one of the re
maining arches of the Bridge !! Now, though
this would he getting rid of tile controversy, in a
iinuot r no doubt tho Most gratifying ro the May
or, aii F d liis.sr’.tclliies, yet is it treating a grave
and absorbing subject with sufficient decorum?
T1 e Bridge is a subject iu which every one in a-
uy wise connected with the prosperity of the city
mist feel a deep interest; and it is natural and
proper that its guardians should give a grave and
rational nroount of it.
The tool iu the Messenger questions the fact
stated by Inquirer, that the.Bridge, could he re
paired, for the .,iitn of 2 Or 300U -dollars against
(hit coming fell or winter, I acknowledge. Mr.
Editor I lint I have no knowledge on this subject
only* tv (rat is founded upon the information of
try ebonies with whom I have conversed. If mp-
ch mics were willing to undertake the repairs of
ilm .Bridge,Trid to-give bond and security for the
faithful’perfortiiance of the work, and for the
keeping up of the Bridge, I dout sco what more
could he w anted. Even if the Bridge was not to
stand more than a j’car, 1 contend it avouhl be c-
conqmy to have it repaired.' And here L repeat,
what-J have said before; that the hss of the
Bridge will-lesson the probable-receipts of co.ttod
in this markf*t..froip tlO to 30,000 hags! aud cou-
se jacntly injure the business of. the place not
less than one hundred thousand dollars !
It may accord with the idea, of the tool "Fateh
Work" to sneer at THE POOR, and think them
of no other use only as subjects of Taxation, a-
lo ig with goats, dogs and hogs—hue let. him be
w ire! Tiic foor Man has rights—and wherev
er upstart authority attempts to trample upon
iliasc rights, it rouses a spirit that Will crush it to
pc wder. *’ *'• k
Whilst on tlii? subject, 1 would also inquire
of "Patchwork” and his master, inhere was the
Proposal for letting out the Bridge advertised ?—
W as it published iu any newspaper, in Macon or
elsewhere ? Was it let out to the lowest bidder,
*.*r *f a s it a .vrivale .contract ? Ami whether the
Mechanics iu Macon were allowed a chance of
iiiiiiing, with the successful contractor? This is
a small matter, hut it is one that many a poor
man feels an interest in. INQUIREU.

We cau rejoice that so have no( been compef- j

ALL ON TAXES.
nnHERE was a time, I know Adi well,
li When houettmen intown could dwell,
But hard titties these, I liever knew,
Until AI aeon from town a City g:ow—
I ask of what necessity have wc to pay
Such Enormous taxes everyday,
I ask for information' to all around,
Is it for digging than traps iu the ground?
Or does the Bridge lebtuldilfg require
Additional Tax to pay the hire?
Or is it a City clock itt which you pride.
Or what is the hohi>y r you intend to ride ?
For we arc threatened on every hand,
A cholera.worse no man can stand;
'Twas but n'fewdays since before awaken’d,
We were deprived of all our bacon,
Ami even now the Marshal's coming
With hogs a squealing—dogs a running
While fathers, mothers till deploring
The waul of bogs, us their children lay sno-
And with such extra taxes every morn,
We’d better never had htcit horn ;
At a timotoo; like this—oh! what a farce,
When money is so very scarce ;
YVhile mcrchautB and media uics are all de
claring
Tariff'drify's Idtigsittec past all bearing.
With I*anks3i breaking every morning,
Planters'din-mg tind a storming, z‘

But 16 me is moslil d alarming.,
