T HE TELEGRAPH, Will, as it has hereto
fore done, vindicate personal and political
liberty, so far as i3 compatible witli private hap
piness and public safety. Tt will therefore cltflg
to the opinions of the Fathers of the Revolution,
as comprised in the Declaration of Independence
and tbe Constitution of the United States; and it
holds it to he a truth almost intuitive, that nu the
most vigilant and unremitting restriction ot the
General aud State branches of our Government to
their respective provinces, depends the benign op
erations ofthose opinions, tbe virtue of the man,
■the franchise of the citizen, and’the internal peace
aud external safety of tile country.
It steers equally far from the new invented the
ory of thenu I lifters ; as it does from the old Fed
eral doctrine of the Cousolidationists—conceiving j
that the true principle of our institutions lies equal- j
ly between the two extremes. And while it sup
ports the Administration in till its judicious nw:a-J
sures, it claims the right to censure it whenever
censure is deserved.
