There is a beautiful morel in die following effusion

Tlsi: Lady Bug and tile Ant.
The Lady-Bug sat in the rose's lieqrt,
.And smiled with pride and scorn,
As she saw a plain rirest Ant go by, _
. AVith a heavy grain of corn,—
So*he drew the curtain* of damask, round,
And adjusted her silken vest.
Making her glass of adropofdew
That lay in the rose’s breast.
Then she laughed so land that die Ant look'd up,
And seeing her haughty face,
Took no more notice, but travel’d on
• At the sanio industrious pace:—
But a sudden blast of autumn eainc,
And rudely swept the ground - ’ ''
And down the rose with the Lady-Bug Sent.
And scatter’d its leaves around.

For she knew not where to go, ...

On finding a irvnn in an cld dull Hook.
Poor atom i thou hast found a dreary home
Within the dullest pages of this tonic.
Each perforated leaf here waded through.
It shows that thou hast done more than l.could do.
Thus wc may learn from every thing we see.
And lessons take, of patitm e, e’en from thee.
For in this musty, old l lack-letter print,
I ne’er could find out much amusement in’t.
Where ancient spelling matter typify',
And terms, long obsolete to mistify.
The style is prosing ami the subject dull,
The empty nothings if a brainless skull!
Bnt here, since thou has found thy wisdom's feast,
I’ll show thee fair humanity, least.
Clotiug the volume, 1 will let thee live,
Nor take away the life I cannot give.
Thus with thy feelings do I sympathize':
I’m but a book-worm of a greater size 1
Who knows, some brother worm, in days to come,
In duller page than this inay find a home;
In silence and obscurity, at rest.

The only living thing who might incline
To travel through some future page of mine !

The Oci.ETHor.PK Celebration os St. Sj
mon’9 Island.-—The Centennial Anniversary of
the lauding of Gen. Oglethorpe on this Island,
was celebrated by the Sporting and Agricultural
Club, on Friday, the 8th of April, in an appro
priate manner. .The celebration should have ta
ken place on the Gib of February last, but was
postponed in consequence of several members
and many of the expected guests having inarch
ed to meet the savage foe on the banks qt the
Wiihlacoocbce.
The proceedings of the day commenced with
aii:impressive prayer by the Rev. T. 11. liar-
tow , niter which an eloquent address was de
livered by T. Spalding. Esq. in which, lie gave
a nriel bnt graphic sketch of the early sotllcmeut
of St. Simons, by Oglethorpe, ami of the buttles
of Bloody Marsh, and at Fort Moussa, in both
of which'sopte of his ancestors served with dis-
tiuctiou.
When Mr. Spalding had finished.Ins addre-s,
the Rev. T. B. Bartow rose, aud delivered an ex
cellent oration, which together with Mr. Spald
ing’s address, will, \ye learn, be published at no
distant period.
TOASTS.
1st. The memory ol Oglethorpe, founder of
Georgia.. •
“Build him no monumcn: of mouldering stone!
’Twere just as wise to rear a tomb tO Time;
His epitaph should be his name alone;
No stone so lasting—language so sublime.”
After this toast had been drank, the following Ode,
written for the occasion by the Rev. T. li.Jtiartow,
was sung by the whole company. •,....

The Book Agent.
As the sun was setiiug, after one of those sul

i hide boet»sw hich would laugh out of contenauco
a Kmnschatkinn winter. On his arm was care
fully folded a butternut colored frock coat, and
in his hand was ;•« extra shirt and dicky, iio<! up
in a cotton flag baud kerchief. On his cutran.co
into the village ho inquired for. tha clergyman,
and being told w here he might be .found, started
post haste for his residence. Arriving at his
house, he found him ewloyiug the cool twiiight in
Lis garden. Stepping up to the fence,, inquired
if the Rev. Mr lived in that neighbor
hood ? The flergymoi. told him he did, aud that
he was the individual to whom ho alluded.
“J’in dreadful • deaf, ’ said the fellow ; “yod
must raise your voice, or 1 cau’thcer a word you
say.” ,
The clergyman put 1,is lips to his ear, and re
pented the declaration that lie was tho person for
w hom he inquired, and asked him tho object of
his call."
“’Tis Lin an awful hot day!" said the traveller,
“but it grows a lectio eocrier as tho sun goes
down.’!
The clergyman again inquired bis business, oti
the top of his lungs.
‘•1 thank yan (thousand times,” said tho stran
ger. ”1 rcckonod'todmvc got to the tavern by sun
down, but I bav'nt. and as I'm prodigiously tuc
kered out. I’ll stay, and thalik yo into the bar
gain,” following the clergyman into the house.
The clergyman handed him a chair, aud after
laying down ‘his coat in the corner of the room
and f;i tmin>r himself a w Idle with his cap. be took
bis seat.
The clergyman, in a loud voice, asked him to
what part ol the country he wai travelling 1
*‘Anv thing that comes handy,” he replied,
••I’m a farmer when at home, and not much used
to nick-nacks—I can cat any thing but cold pork
aud cabbage, and that I ucver could eat, since I-
was a boy ; but don’t put yourselves out of the
w av at ail about supper.”
The clergyman inquired again, in a stiil lou
der voice, if he was from Vermont.
“ i’m getting subscribers,” said ho, “for a val
uable book—it’s the works of John Runyan, or
Jonathan Btinynn—I don’t rcraember'exactlr
which—but TU. see.” pulling our ‘his prospectus
and handing it to the clergyman.’’
The clergyman, after looking at it handed i:
back, and remarked, that he did not wish to. sub
scribe.
“Oyes.” 'ic replied, “I always carry a pea and
ink with me, as 1 find a great many folks that
don’t keep sicli tilings iu their houses.” pulling
out his pen and ink aud offering it to the tier-'
gyinau.
The clergyman raised his voice to the. highest
key, and said ho •‘must lie excused from sub--
scribing.” >
••Jest ns well.” said the agent *‘I write the
names of half my subscribers myself,’’.euteriog
the name of tho clergyman in his bookl
The clergyman, despairing of making the fel
low hear any thing, concl uded to get rid of .him
tho easiest way ho could.' He therforc furnished
him with a good supper and bed. In the mor
ning he told him, In a voice as loud as ho was
master of. that he did not want the work’, and
should not take it.
••Don’t give yourself any uneasiness about it,”
said the agent,'”! never iorget subscribers and
especially ministers—you shall hnvo it in due
time.” "Thanking him for his kindness and hos
pitality and bidding him good morning, ho trud
ged off as fast as his legs could carry him.
About a month after, as tbe clergyman was on
his way :o visit a brother in tho ministry in a
neighboring town, he was not a little sttrprieea
to meet his old guest, the deaf agent. lie was
dressed much in the same manner as before— but
he was seated on a box, in the fore part of a wag
on, drawn by a horse that would rcquu'c stall fee
ding to make much of a shadow. Coming tip
with him. he jumped outofhis wagon, shook him
coidiallyhy the hand,’aud said he was going di
rectly to his house with his books.
Tho clergyman said that he must he excused
from taking them, as ho htd a set already ou-
hand.
‘•No matter.” said the agent, *Tm going right
by your house, andean leave the hooks aud tako
the money of your wife,” getting into his wagon
and driving off.
The clerg3*man. fearing that Ills family might
take the books in his absence, put about for home,
and arrived just as the agent was driving up.
Seeing the clergyman had returned, he said;
“you came back for fear of rain I spose—and it
does look ns though e were going to have a
long s;orm,” taking tho books irotn his boxamj
carrying thttn into the house.
The clergyman told him, as loud as he could,
that he did not waut the books, and thought
ho was insulting him by forcing them upon. 1
him.
The agent said he iiiteuded to have got a
little further before the storm, but jf he could
not conveniently pay him the money then ho
must accept of his invitation aud stay till tho
fl storm was over.
The clergyman, fiudiug lie must tako the hook*,
or keep the follow threfe or four days, paid him
tho money, as tho easiest way to get rid of
him.
