Editor Georgian: While in vour
city a few days since, I heard con
siderable discussion, over an article
appennug in your paper headed
“Temperance Lecture.”
The article in question seemed to
be bitterly denounced by the friends
of the liquor traffic as an article cal
culated to do the town of Bellton a
great injury, on account of its out
spoken denunciation.
Now, Mr. Editor, I think myself
that it is not fair to strike such one-
' sided blows, without giving the “par-
I tie* struck.” a chance to be heard.
I These gentlemen who keep those bar
; rooms are doubtless law-abiding citi-
I zens, and they are bound to be pro
tected by the authorises. The writer
of the article, referred to calls these
bar room* “Dens of hell.” By what
right does he make this assertion?
Does he mean to say that the town
authorities are i;t league with the
Devil because they license these men
t<’ sell their rum ?
The expenses of the town must.be
met, and these men are willing to
]«y a large license, so as to be pro
tected in their business. What if a
few score of men do occasionally got
a little too mmlt whisky? If thiy
neglect their business and spend their
time around these places, whose, busi
ness is it but their own?
This is a free country, Mr. Editor,
and you have no right to abuse the
men who sell him the liquor that
makes him a “loafer.” He may got
drunk occasionally and expose hin
self in all his beast lines*, profaning
the name of God in the ears of your
children; but this is no excuse for
abusing the man that made him
drunit— rrriainly not.
The bar keeper obey* the law. and
the city authorities are in duty bound
to protect him in Ids business. Then
why this abuse from your over ‘Pious
tneddleis?’ If men will g;ct drunk
and neglect their families, that is
their business and not the liquor
dealer. Why, sir, the money these
men pay for the privilege of making
drunkards, go a great way toward de
fraying the expenses of the town.
But, Mr. Editor, laying aside all
monetary considerations, I contend
that the friends of. and the liquor
dealers themselves, have a right to
be heard—and with your permissio i,
I would make this suggestion, viz:
Thai the friends of the traflic appoint
a time in the near future for a public
discussion of the question at issue;
that they appoint speakers who shall
d< fend the businuss of “rum selling”
and “drunkard making,” and as they
have been attacked, I think they
should have the right < f lime ami
place; provided, that the. time and
place shall be so arranged, that the
“Women and children” may be in
vited to hear both sides, and then let
these “Fanatical temperance men”
and “over-zealous Christians” accept,
if they dare, a free and open discus
sion of the whole matter. What do
you say. friends of the liquor traflic?
Shall we sit down quietly, wiih our
arms folded, and allow our institu
tions defamed by a set of “families,”
acknowledging by our silence the
truthfulness of their position, or shall
we defend ourselves as gentlemen
should, by a free and open discussion
before the public, who arc most in
terested in the question ?
There is just one of two things left
for us to do. We must cither defend
the position of the liquor traffic, or
we must cower before our enemies,
' and acknowledge that they arc right
and wc are wrong. The issue is upon
j us—which horn of the dilemma shall
wc accept ?
Mr Editor, I have trespassed thus
far upon your space, hoping thereby
to throw “oil” upon the “troubled
j waters” of your community, by giv
i ing both sides a fair showing, which
can only be done by a fair, gentle
i manly and open discussion.
Fair Play.

The in'.'untion of that Superior and
Complete Sewing Machine (the Fam
ily Shuttle Machine), marks one of
the most important < r:is in the history
lof machinery, and when we consider
its great nsefuinoss and extremely
low price (825), it. is very difticult to
conceive of any invention for domes
tic nee of more or even equal impor
tance to families. It has great ca-
pacify for work; beautiful, smooth,
ami quiet movement, rapid execution,
certainty of operation, and delightful
case, that nt once commends it above
all others. The working parts are all
steel; the bobbins hold 100 yards of
tliread; the stitcli is the firmest of all
the stitches made, neat and regular,
and can be regulated in a moment to
sew stitches from an inch in length
on coarse material down to the. finest,
so infinitesimal as to be hardly dis
cernable with the naked eye, and
with a rapidity rendering it impossi
ble to count them as fast as made; it
does to perfection all kinds of heavy,
coarse, plain, fine, or fancy needle
work with ease, and far less labor
than required on other machines. It
needs no commendation, the rapid
sales, increasing demand, and volun
tary encomiums from the press, and
the thousands of families who use
them, amply testify to their undoubt
; cd worth as a standard and reliable
, household necessity, extending its
i popularity each day. Agents wanted
