Renewed Ntorins in Lhej West arc
reported. Much damage has resul
ted.
General Longstreet has taken
charge of the office as: Marshal of the
State.
President Garfield is in>]>rovi»g
and strong hopes are entertained for
his recovery.
I he State capital question is being
again agitated with fair prospects of
a new, commodious and substantial
building being erected.

AttorneyjGcncral MacVeagb has
decided that the Commissioners of
the “noldibi-tp homes”are not entitled
*o the bounty land warrants which
have been turned over to them as
part ol the etlects of deceased sol
diers.
'1 he Nashville Banner concludes,
in an able editorial of the "th inst.,
that the attempted assassination of
I resident Garfield,will end in a bless
ing in disguise. So we believe and so
we iiaveisaid* “God moves in a mys
terious way his'wonders to perform.”
At the present time there arc more
negroes at school’in the South than
thereover were before. The census
says there are twice as many, and
that the acreage land owned by
colored people is four times as great ;
us ten years ago.

A.snakc storyjis published in some
western papet, staling that a s.,akc
swallowed some turkey eggs in Tal
botton Ga., a few weeks ago, upon
which the old hen had been setting,
and hatched them out in hi< stomach,
the little turkeys coming out of his
mouth as gay as young larks.
“The increasing number ofhomi--
tides in the county, and the frequent
accidents from firearms, call for the
strongest measures against the carry
ing of concealed weapons,” the Wash
ington Star thinks, “as all the mur
ders. and nearly -all’, the vausalties,
proceed as a direct, result front this
practice.”

The Home" Courier reports that a !
Mr. A\ atkinx, while driving homo on i
the night of the hh, dro\ <■ over
Black’s Bluff, a dist mice of some fifty ■

drowned and the driver received such
severe injuries that little hope of his 1
recovery is entertained.

II is impossible that the assassina
tion of President Garfield should not
recall the banging of Mrs. Surratt
She was Lurried in hot haste to the
gallows, to appoaao a ' populace that
hungered for victims. Lot Guitteau’s
trial be speedy, but not too hasty (bat j

chance.
Mr Justice Clifford. who lies at the

A womanj belonging to the sect
called Perfectionists undertook to
run herself to death’at Dallas, Texas.
She’gct the idea front a Scriptural
passage about “running the race to
the end,” that if she ran till she died
she would go direct to heaven. She
could not kill herself by pedestrian
ism, however, and resorted to drown
ing instead.
The mortality caused by the hot
wcatherjin IbU.M . stern cities is tru
ly startling. The figures show that
week before last thej deaths from
sunstroke in the five Stales <>t Illinois
Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Kentuc
ky were about 200 lor six. day '.
The death rate, outside ot sunstrokes,
increased about 125 per cent, in Chi
lago.’lidu per cent, in St. Louis,'’32o
per’eont hi (. iuciutiati, and a’similar
rate, in other Western cities. The
hot spell seems to extend across the
country, ah-n . the line of tie. Ohio
river, Cincinnati as its centre.

' The Attorney General has decided
that n silver dollar is a dollar. The
question came up relative to the re
demption of National bank notes.
The United States Treasurer desired
a construct ion of th< la w which requir-;
cs him, in terms, to redeem National ;
bank notes, lie wished an opinion ;
from the Attorney General, under I
which he might act, as he did not feel
j authorized to construe, the law to t
■ mean that he could redeem National
bank notes in silver dollars, although
| they have been made legal tender;
j for ali purposes. The Attorney Gett. I
I oral replies that the laws have made
■ the silver dollar a legal tender for all 1
' purposes, and that they are a dollar I
; for all purposes, and that the silver
' dolhtr law repeals the specific langua
gue of the redemption law. which re-j
quires National bank notes to be re
deemed in legal tender, to the extent
that the. silver dollar act placed sil-;
ver dollars on an equality with any ■
, legal tender money, and that it was
;to be presumed that National bank
; notes could not »e redeemed in gold.
It has not, however, been the custom
to redeem them in gold, on account ;
of the technical language of the law .
I but, by the decision of the Attorney
i General, gold and and silver and
■ United States notes are put upon an
'equality. The redemption checks of
; the Treasurer, which hitherto have
. read, ‘.Redeemable or payable in ■
United States notes,” now read,
’’Payable in so many dollars.”
