A Suicide’s Singular Letter.
Peter Ganncfe, who euicided in New
York, has left a singular and rather read
able letter for public j>er»ual. He com
mitted the deed in Central Park by open
ing a bloodiVesael, after having failed to ■
kill himself by taking morphine, but did
not die until after being conveyed to
the Roosevelt Ho»i4Ud.. After writing at
great length on intemperance, he pro
ceeds :
“I think my mind is well balanced,
and I have no fear of death. What lit
tle fear I did possess has been dissapated
by the facts of Spiritualism. Tire mere
act of dying is nothing to me, if there is
not physical pain, and I think I know
something of the countfy to which I am
going. 1 know many good men who
would leave the world to-day if it were
not for the fear of death ; and this same
fear is the world's greatest benefactor,
for without it the world would loose
many good men long- before nature,
claimed them. I almost hoax men say,
‘ What a fool to die/ How do you know
you little atoms, groveling in the sand ,
for jewels, groping in tho darkness for'
the essence of light, searching in the
haystack for selfishness and dissipation
for the needle happiness ? Can the rich
man extrapt happiness enough for his
millions ? or docs the thought that for
every dollar he possesses above his
actual needs some other human being
suffers, embitters his luxuries? Bah !
this is making considerable of a time
the dropping of an atom into the
n»Mlloss ocean of eternity. ♦ * * I
select this place to die in, first, because
I want to die among the trees ; secondly,
because I don’t wish to be disturbed,
but to die alone; and last but not least,
T don’t wish to put any of my friends to
the expense of a funeral or the trouble
and bother of an inquest. I would like
a lock of my mother’s hair, in my pocket,
buried with my body, and the letter
mailed to the person addressed.
“There is something fascinating in
the idea of dashing headlong, in full
vigor of youth and mental power, across
that gloomy, mysterious boundary—the
valley of tlie shadow of death, with the
charming uncertainty whether one shall
find a paradise, beautiful and happy be
yond human conception, or a desolate
howling Wilderness, or nothing." In
conclusion he writes : “What a beau
tiful evening! Just the time to die. So
by your leave, gods, I will make another
assault oil the affections of that coy dam
sel, death—a thorough coquette, who
forces her favors on those who do not
want them, but ever flies from the
ardent, earnest wooer. But 1 will court
you in sb bold a fashion this time you
must yield. How one hates to inflict
physical pain on one's self ! It did not
bother me a particle to inject and swal
low morphine, but I do hate to slash
into my arteries. Well, by by old world:
I believe I’ve had enough of you 1”
The Terrible Cabbage Habit.
There is no disguising the fact that our
people are becoming addicted to the
cabbage habit to such an extent that
they are unable to shake it off. If they
cannot get the wherewith to shake thoir
appetite for cabbage at home, they will
levy upon foreign countries for a supply.
The cabbage habit comes on a mon
gradually. At first ho trios a little raw
cabbage, and likes it. Ho next takes it
with vinegar, until his appetite craves
something stronger, when he resorts to
the sauerkraut, mid then there is no help
for him. From the moment that ho
places the pl utter of the fermented sauer
kraut to his lips, he is a changed man.
Friends may rally around him and try to
got him to turn over a new cabbage leaf,
and stifle his appetite, but he is deaf to
their -entreaties. He laughs at their
fears. He even gives cabbage to his
children, and instances have been known
w here whole families, men tottering with
age, men in the prime of life, women
with balms in arms, and innocent child
ion have all been seen around a table in
dulging in eabboge in its various forms.
Men under the influence of cabbage
have been seen walking along the public
streets with cabbage concealed in
baskets, taking the intoxicating fruit to
their once happy homes to lie made up
into sauerkraut. If accused of an inten
tion to convert theoabbage into the kraut
that giveth the color and smell to the
iirkin, they will laugh it off andeven ad
mit it. It is time something were done
to rescue our neighbors from the de
moralizing cabbage habit. Lot ns form
temperance societies to rescue the fallen
cabbage consumers, and cause happiness
where now is gloom and the smell of
kraut Let us go among the cabbage
i aters and beg them to look not upon t he
cabbage while it is red, or white, but
take an oath to abstain from it. Let ns
nominate an anti-cabbage ticket for
State officers, composed of men who
have indulged in cabbage to excess and
been reformed, and snatched like brands
from the burning, and let us go before
the people on a platform that denounees
tho practice of eating cabbage, and calls
any man that likes cabbage a horse thief
and a villian. Think of it. Men are
being cut off every day, with their facul
ties impaired, and their skins full of cab
bage, No one is safe as long as the cab
bage enter is allowed to go about, hold
ing office and drawing salaries. Let us
work while the day lasts, in this cabbage
reform, and pay our salaries out of the
collections taken up. The country is in
danger as long as the growth of cabbages
is not prohibited by law.— Peck's Sun.

At the National Industrial Exhibition
in Milan was exhibited an electrical
voting apparatus, designed by Signor
Roncelli, a member of the Italian Par
liament. The idea is simply as follows :
Each member of the house has in front
of him a metal plate bearing his name.
The plate is furqished with three metal
buttons, marked respectfully, “ lye,”
“Nd” and “Abstain.” This plateisin
connection with a central printirg ap
paratus, which prints in three separate
columns tlie yeas, noes and abstainers,
according as the members depress their
resp' ctive buttons. A fourth column
marks the absentees. At tho moment of
recording each vote, a number corres
ffmdtng with the number of the vote
appears, so that the total may be seen
at a glance. By thia system, members
can vote and keep their seats, a great
saving of time being thus affected.

It is a great honor to these makers, t hat

Hall't Journal of Health, referring to Consumption,
makes tho following important statement:
“ Consumption usually begins with a slight, dry cough
in the morning, then, on going to bed, getting more snd
more frequent, with more and more phlegm, increaAing
debility, thinness of flesh, shertnees of breath, and quick,
uess of pulse. In fatal cases it® aver»g«' course is about
two years: hence the importance of an eating the
at aa eatly a stage as poasible, and the sooner rational
means are empl iyed for this purpose the greater tlie
chance of success. The disease is owing to an irritation
commenciug in the throat and extending to the lungs, so
that their action ia interfered with, and the blood does not
teceiveeuttcienl oxygen to purify it. The most marked
sigu of lung disease is emaciation ; and the mo»t posi
tive indication of returning health is increase in weight.”
So t;peaks Hall's Jownol qf Health, and we may add
that m desperate eases, and, tn fact, m all ca>es of« .n
