OUR POSITION.
It is a fact well known to the rest!
re of the Banker that we have been,
up :o the appointment of Governor
Brown a* United States Senator, liOtb
personally mid politically, the true
and earnest friend h.td aupjiorter of
Governor Colquitt. While we ItuaJ
our personal relations will suffer
interruption, yet since this last act of
Ilia administration we have Wti com-
;iel!ed to split with him politically, for
the iollowing, which we consider, good
and valid reasons:
Firrt, the |>o]itical r- cord of Gov
ernor Biown during the black-days of
Georgia, is such, that we cannot cons
ceive how. Governor Colquitt could
have possibly appointed him General
Gordon's successor, without doing the
greatest and grossest injustice to
Georgia “and the Democracy which
honored him with the position he uow
holds.'
Secondly, there are a number of
good, true, tried, capable and faithful
Democrats nud patriots in Georgia
who have never bceu found wanting
when our State or the Democratic
party have needed tlivir services, who
have ever'been ti ue and faithful to
Governoi Colquitt as a friend and

whole people of Georg it expected him

As to General Gordon’s resigning,
we have only to say, that unquestion
ably be had a legal right to do so, but
that the time and inamur in which
he did so, was certainly unjust both
to himself and the people of Georgia
who had honored Inm with so high a
trust. We can’t see how General Gor
don got his consent to resign his posi
tion as United Slates Senator just at
a time when this country is just upon
the eve of the most important politics
battle ever before fought in the histo
ry of our government. One which
involves the very existence and perpe-.
tnity nf our free, republican institu
tions. It occuis to us that any one of
his illu.-tii.iiis> predecessors would have
occupied their Senatorial seals with
patched trous>n ami thread tiare
! coats, before tin y would have resign
ed at such a juncture. Again, we do
not think Gcm ral Gordon did right in
keeping the purpose of his resigning a
secret from the people ot Georgia, and
an > then shucking the whole country
with its suddenness. The General
ought certainly lo have put the people
on i ottce, li\ making hi, resignation
