Genuine Poetry.
BT J> Lti rLXASAXTIi.
The following touching poutioal tribute to
tbe mttnorj of Robert A. Whyte, late edi
tor ~f ti e “Home Gazette,” at Augusta,
t'ra «r*re written some ten or twelve years
.lisa Pleasants, whom we believe a
ns tire of Huntsville in this State, has
'.i re in Tied Dr. Creswell, ’of Mansfield,
i. aifiana. Os this lovely and appropriate
monody, the Louisville Journal said : “One
almost wish to die if he knew that so
beautiful a tribute would be written to his
memory. We ask those of our readers
who admire pathos, to read these verses
with care. ‘
ROBEBI A. WHYTE,
On the b-rom of a river
W frt the sun unloosed bis qniref,
Or the star-light streamed forever,
Sailed a vessel light and free.
M 'ruing dew-drops, hung, like manna,
On the bright folds es her banner.
While the sephyra rose to fan her
SofUjr to the radiant sea.
At her prow, a pilot beaming
In the flash es youth stood dreaming,
And he waa in glorious Kerning
L ke an angel from above.
TANARUS) r ugh his ha r tbs breezes sported,
And as on the waves he floated,
Os thM pile, angel throated,
W-rbled lajt of hope and love.
Though those looks so brightly flowing,
Bat* j( l m -el-slooui were blowing,
And his hands anon were throwing
Mu-ic frsm a 1/re of gold.
Bwlfily uown the stream he glided,
8. ft the purple wavra divided,
A. and a taihbow arch alighted
t/a hia canrs a* ano wy fold.
Anti-»as hearts, with fond devotion,
W steted him sat.in? to the oceae;
Pr.ticg that no wild commotion,
’.Midst the item. nls might rise.
Ar-d hesetmed >oang Apollo
Charming su.iim-r winds to follow,
Wn ie the water fiat* corolla
Ttemb'.ed to h a music sigh*.
Bit tho*e purple waves enchanted
lie led btsidea c'.ty haunted
By an awful spell, that daunted
Every comer to her shore.
> ght-shadea rank the air encumbered,
An<l pale marble statues numbered
Where the lotus eaters slumbered
And awoke to life no more.
*ien there rushed with lightning swiftness
ti er his fare a mortal sickness,
A 1 the dews In fearful thickness,
Gather o’er his temples fair.
And there swept a dying murmur
Through the lovely Southern Bummer,
As the beauteous pilot comer
Perished by that city there.
Still rolls on that radiant river,
And the Bun unbinds his quiver,
Or the star-light streams forever,
On its bosom as before.
But that vessel's rainbow banner
Oreo's no mire the gay Savannah,
And the pilot's lute drops manna
On the purple waves no more.
rn -.'idled Insolence of the Negroes In
Washington.
' V very day the negroes have become
tuor ■ and more insolent. This insnlpnoe
<i r not prevail among the negroes
who h ive lived hero for many years, who
are n w, as tfcev have always been, respect
ful and ioustrious. But nine-tenths of the
1102 . a here now arc fugitive slaves, who
: iv c me here during the last throe years,
ai.-.i kan have beeu pampered and puffed up
r Abolitionists, and their impudence
onl r douce have bccomo intolerable. It
-ii j ible for a gentleman to walk a sin
■ tre on the Avenue without being in
t ia the grossest and most offensive
man r• r t*y a dozen negro boys. In no other
v would such unseemly conduct be tole
i 1. \et here the police take no notice
id r. aud there seems to be no remedy for
:ho ’race. A distinguished General, who
wen: ut • , a barber sht.p to get shaved yes
nr j .v, wac spoken to so insultingly, and in
-uei. a grossly offensive manner, by a negro,
sliat iio was going to shoot the latter, and
I !i >ve done so but for the interposition
. f :ho bystanders. But the matter has
r ae’i and a pass now, beyond which it will
not permitted to go. Gentlemen have
r: sc iusult» from negroes long enough.
X white man would presume to offer to
an oil r the insults that white peop’e here
. !y recvive trim filthy blacks, and the
v ..iv p' >ple here have Come to the eonclu
- ■ it they have bieo insulted by negroes
a ; ' >u* . ng enough. Whatever may be the
crj- of this unbridled insolence on the
part f the blacks, it is certain that they
i 4Y«* b < n led and encouraged to indulge in
if, fr'tu the fact that Eegroes have been
p!ac i in the army on a footing of perfect
iqu ii y with white soldiers, and have
leirtfi that ihe exchange of prisoners was
propped by the Government for months, and
SO. OOO white s< ldiers kept at Aodersouville,
whore n any of them died, solely in order
tic niprl the Confederate Government to
adurt that negroes were the equals of white
sold .rs The outbreaks in various parts of
:he country, which have taken place in con
st qucnce of the insolence of the blacks,
l ave not escaped the attention of the Gov
emiro n*. and it has been determined by the
President to disband all bodies of negro
troops as quickly a9 possible. I am not
aware es the grounds upon which this de
cision w s made. The Secretary of War is
and s o hsvo been opposed to it. But there
rea* u to believe that it has been adopted
in order to cheek, if possible, the growing
insolence of the blacks, and to prevent any
armed bodies of negroea from joining the
black* in any insurrection which they may
be mad enough to undertake. The fact that
all negro troops are to be immediately mus-
Ured out of the service ta certain.— Wash*
