For asmuch as tunny have taken
in hand to Bet forth in order a
declaration of the life and virtues
of the great oomoner, his moral
and physical heroism, his public
worth, bis wonderful achieve
ments from his youth to his last
set in the governors mansion of
Georgia., and his unspotted char
acter withal, it seems but right
and proper that we too should
blend our voice with the loud la
mentation and words of praise
that resound from shoro to
shore of our uuiou. Mr. Steph
ens, by virtue of graco and in-
disponsible worthto his country,
lived the allotted time of man on
this earth. He was about 71
yews old when he "passed ovor
the river to rest under the Bliade
of the trees." The long looked
for dissolution came about 3.30
o’clock last Sunday nturning, and
the great soul so loug pout up iu
that frail tenement of clay burst
its shackles and went forth to its
account and to mingle with tho
Bouls of men.
Yes, Mr. Stephens is dead, but
his memory we cherish, his soul
has gone to the God who gave it,
and his body lies low iu tho
urouud. He lived
"The applause of listening Scuatcs to
command;
The threats of pain and i uln to despise;
To waiter plenty o'rea siniilng land
And -ead his history in a nations eyes.”
Young mau, you who are now
standing at tbe for.70 of life whore
the frai e work of yo
is being luauu, n-t u < point you
to a life and career worthy of im
itation, aud listen to the sound of
a name that will never cease to
be praised and heard atlown tho
coridors of time- Mr. Stephens
was the Demosthenes of modern
times, in person auo genius, pos
sessing that etberal tiro which
bas quickened the mighty minds
of all the greatest men of earth
Hut now he has gone whore sick
ness, sorrow, paiu and death are
felt and feared no more, the home
, of the good. And again young
lest attent on, and we will be
beard in no uncertain sound.
Even so in all political questions
iu this county, but in tho mat
ter of wliiskoy or no jjdiiskoy in
this county wo loavoJue discus
sion of its merits mtn its par
tisans, and can Ot ^oursolves be
come a partisan of eitlior side of
the question. However, wo do
not hesitate to say as an individ
ual, aside from tho policy of the
paper, that it wore better, far bet
ter, tliat every drop of ai'dont
spirits upon the broad face of
the eartli wore pourod out upon
the grouud. Thoro.is not a man
porliaps in this country that if
left to an unbiased judgment, but
would,iu the light of roaHou,obser
vation aud experience say it is a
orying evil. It is entirely out
side of our purview to
essay to advocate it tare, but we
will give one illustr.iflbh iu point
jnBt now of some of the evils of
strong dtink. Biuco commencing
to write this article a voter, and a
gentleman was brought into the
drug store for surgical attention,
with a bndly fractured arm; tho
result of Lilliug out of a wagon
in an intoxicated couditiou. Tho
same gentleman was iu our cilice
not nnre than a half hour before
his misfortune, sound and O. Iv.
Of courso lie would have escaped
the injury had it not boon for
strong drink.
But tbo poople must decido
this question. It is argued by
some that an olootion cannot be
legally held at this time on ac
count of a statue that forbids an
election being hold within two
years from tho dato of the last
oluctiou hold. Bo that as it may,
we know that the eyes of our
neighboring citios and counties
are turned to usward and are
watching tho result with great
auxiety and solicitude. Let the
right prevail.

can nation. But the struggle was
soon over, though not forgotton,
and spring and sunshine brnko in
on the poople about New Hope.
Though tho whole country was in
a state of devastation, all laid to
with now energy, and everything
was not only repaired but im
proved, and now in place of par
apets stands a neat and comfor
table church house; and in liou
to the great gnus stands the min
ister sending forth the .gospel of
trntli; and in lieu of the contend
ing armies stauds a congregation
ofspleqdid specimens of man and
womanhood to join in hymns of
praise to the great anil All Wise
Creator. Now all is sunshine,
and New Hope has a name on
tho pages of the history of the
,rert American Nation, and in
the book of eternal life.
