On n recent trip by ■ representative o(
Ihit paper to the city ol Haverhill, Man
a moat important Incident occurred, whicn
cannot (all tobeol Ihe greatest intereat to
ail, end eapeclally to our lady readera.
The newapaper man met a lady a trifle
past middle age, with Iniurioua while
hair that contraated atrlklngly with pierc
ing black eyea. She poaaeaaed a airtight,
full habit, womanly, but • commanding,
combined with mannera wholly lady-like,
nnd yet pronounoeil. Any acute Jndgeol
human nature could jee at once that he
waa In the presence of an unusual peraon-
age—one destined to accomplish more than
most of her sex, and to exert an Influence
far-reschlng in Ita power. This lady waa
Mrs. M. \V. Wingate. Almost from child
hood sho has taken a special Intereat in the
bodily troubles of her sox, and lias proba
bly been more successful In relieving suf
fering and saving lives than any othei
woman In America. Indeed, she aeemato
have been to women what Florence Night
engale urn) Dorothy,!*!* were to the suffer
ing soldiers. The Instances of woman wht
were In the greatest agony and apparently
heyond the reach of human aid, that she
has restored to heal lb and happiness, are
almost Innumerable, and It waa only
natural that the scribe should become
specially interested nnd wish to converse
with her more in detail.
"How long have you been engaged In the
practice of medicine, Mrs. Wingate7“
"For more than twonly-flvo years."
“A long time, certainly. How did you
- happen to enter the field at that early
day when women in the profeealon were
specially frowned down upon7"
“1 think 1 must have (nhsriied a taste
from my father, Profeasor .!. C. Wood, ot
Harvard College. He was eminent In the
profession, a hard worker and equally
earnest In his recreations. He limited con
siderably, and I remember when only nine
yenra old I used to dissect the hints and an
i mnls be had killed. I felt Infatuated with
medical science, even then, and the Infat
uation has continued up to tha present
time."
"And did you begin your studies so
early In life?''
“lean hardly aay when I began, fori
can not rrmemlier when I did not rred
medical literature. You would searcely
believe It, hut I was a slender girl and did
not weigh over 120 pounds hut I need to
sit up night after night until two o'clock
In the morning poring over my atudle-
Kiitl never dreaming of tin* flight' of time
It seemed as though calls for my attend
anre on the tick always came tn solicited
1 certainly eannot fix tlie date when I fir *
began practicing. Of course most of nij
patients were women, and tha natura'
sympathy I felt for my sex has Increased
during nil there years where I Imvc Is el
broil gilt so closely In contact with them
nnd have learned to anticipate their needs
and sympathize with their sufferings
After tho opening of the lloaton Medical
College I Iippcnrcd before this faculty,
passed exsminatlon and recelvad a til-
plums. 1 had practiced for years previous
to that Into hut thought It dctlrnhle to
receive nuotherdiplonni.wlilch I did with
out any effort."
"Your experience with the tnanyano
serious diseases of women having been s,
extensive must also ho valitulde. Cm
you give me some fads regarding them?'
"I find that woman seems born to suf
fering, snd whero she avoids It, It Is In
reason of some rare on her part, or owin’,
to soma special ronewlng power. It i,
trite some women go through life wllhou'
unusual suffering, but they arc none tit-
less in danger, for there are'erltinsl |ioriod,
all along tbeir pathway when the litmus
precaution is required. Tbo lunuincrabh
complaints called female weaknesses; thi
irregnlnrltles of life and elmnges of tin
system nil indicate llu- perils which hull) 1
over every woman's career, and which,
tinhss attended to, may result dissr
irottsly.”
"nut la there no way by which these
terrible troubles can lie avoided?"
' That has been tho problem for years.
The h tbits of life and the demands ol
fashion arc clearly at war witli the health
of women. I have been, perha|>s, unusu
ally successful in my treatment of (licit
troubles, hut there have been many cases
that seemed specially stubborn. I recallone
in particular. I had exhausted all the usttnl
expedients anil the results were not sails
factory, f became worried over Ihe ease
ami really did not know what tn do, hut
finally thought I would try something nut
of the usual line. ! had heard a certain
remedy recommended very highly and so I
procured some nnd made a chemical analy-
sisnf It. 1 found It was perfectly nitre.and
that the ingredients were unusually value
blo.Bu I began giving it to my patlont, chang
ing it, however, into a bottle of my own.
To my gicat Joy it. seemed to have an al
most immediate effect nnd n complete rttre
was the result. Since then I have used it
constantly in my practice and have cured
every form of female weakness, as well as
displacements, dropsical tumors, celltt
dropsy and all such troubles. 1 have also
used it with the best of results In cases of
pregnancy nnd gestation. Indeed I have
found It of untold value nnd benefit
' 11 tve you any objections to giving me
the name of titis remedy of which you
apeak 7"
■-,"j? one whatever. It is Warner's SnU
Kidney and Liver Cure."
"Why, that is a proprietary medicine!"
"Certainly, but wlmt of that? I have
hut one end in view in the treatment of my
jiatients, namely—their restoration to
health. In the accomplishment of this
end I prescribo what I believe to he ben-
i ticial, no matter what the professional con
sequences may he."
“I notice in the New York papers that
I'octors Hammond, Agnew and other
prominent physicians are taking a similar
stand, Mrs. Wingate."
es, and all lndejiendeut thinkers in
the profession are bound to do so. I am.
however, on the best of terms with my pro
fessional brethren as you can see.’ and the
lady produced a beautiful gold medal,
mounted in the form of a badge, which had
been presented her by the medical society
known as the Ensign of the Humble Fun
ny, of winch she ia a prominent member
After examining it closely, the reporter
remarked that tlie medical profession evi
dently were proud of what she had done,
as sue might well be in the possession of
such a medal.
.“Iam proud of that,” she replied, "and
I wns.also pleased a short time since to re
ceive an offer at a large salary to take the
rn 1 # 1 " the new medical college at
Walla Walla, on the Paciflc coast. I do
not know how they heard ol me out there,
bu ,t I obliged to decline their offer."
And so, In your experience with the
diseases of women, you Lr-c Lmnd success
and that Warner's Safe Cure has been a
most efficient remedy."
“Yes. I hare had unusual success and
the remedy of which you speak has'been
proven of great benefit. There are how
ever. some base imitations of it to be found
in the market; these are bad and should
be avoided. Iqut the genuine remedy is one
of. the very heat." I
"And Inis not the practice of your profes
sion Injured your health?"
"No, I am letter now than ever before in
my life. I froze my limbs last winter,
while riding one cold night to Bee a patient
nnd wee obliged to remain Indaon la* over
two months. Otherwise I am healthy, as
you can tee by looking at me.”
“And may I publish thla interview, Mrs.
» t agate?"
"Yes. It what I have told yon abeald
lie the means of assisting any women who
may he suffering, I aboil be perfectly will
ing to have it pabllahad.”

What a difference there ia in the ways
of a nun’s and a woman’s falling on
the ico. A man will go sprawling nil
over the t-idetvalk, anil after kicking
about like a crab with tho shaking palsy
for two or threo minutes, will finally got
up with a thoroughly demoralized air,
his raiment covered with dirty snow
and his mind full of maledictions; but n
woman, bless her! Whon she falls, sho
sinks down with a courtesy into a neat
and compact bundle, and before you
know it is on hor feet again, sailing
swiftly away, with a seraphic smile on
her face, sunshine in her heart, and not
so much us a suggestion of her downfall
on her clothing.—Boston Transcript.
