TO PREACH MOSLEMISM
WAITING.
ExOoniJt Webb, Barked by Me
hammadan Caah, Return*
to Amorioa.
Alexander Itinwell V\ eld*, who,in
1885 went to the Philippine islands
as United State i consul, has re-
turnad ns a missionary of Moham
ti ed and with unlimited money at
his disposal, supplied by wealthy
Moslems of Bombay and Allah ib.ui.
will undertake the work of eon
\erting Christians to Islamism.
Mr. Webb or Mohammed Webb,
as ho ,-alls himself reached this oity
recently and lived very quietly at
the Coieman ho.iae until a few
days ago, when he went to live
with his friend, Samuel brown, at
No. 9 Clinton avenue. Jersey City.
He says he feels it his duty to car
ry the religion of the prophet to
the people of the United States.
It in ty bn possible that there is
some great commercial scheme
back of it ull by whiuh trade will
be, for the first time, ojiened with
the Mohuminedan nations, but mo
I in mined Webb declares that he
only came here as a missionary to
spieiul the word.
There can be no question that
the missionary is liberally backed
in his enterprise by Mohammedan
monoy. It is his purpose to estab
lish a weekly magazine printed in
English which will advocate the
Moslem belief. He will circulate
translations of the Koran until one
is in each house in the UnitedStates.
Native missionaries from India and
Arabia will follow him soon, and
these wiii assist him in his work
Rich Mohammedans of Bombay
have pledged S 150,000 to the work.
The headquarters will be in this
i ity. Enough money has been
supplied to keep the increment go
ing on for five years. By that
ti re Mohammed Webb said yes
terday. the cause will be on a sufli.
c ently firm footing to take care of
■tself.
One of the missionary's friends
in this city is Colonel David B.
Sickles, of No. 48 West 119th St.,
who, tomorrow night, will give a
inception to Mohammed Webli, at
his house. He has invited a num
ber of journalists, writers and
thinkers to meet his guest. Among
those to whom cards have been
sent are Edmund Clarence Sted-
man, F. Marion Crawford, Bronson
Howard, John Uussel Young, Col
onel Robert G. Ingersoll, Paul Du
Chuillu, Charles Insley Pardee,
George F. Seward, ex-minister to
China, and Samuel Clemens.
Mr, Webb is of middle age, of
] ortly build ami with long beard.
A few years ago he was one of the
editors of a St. Louis newspaper.
He lias always been a student on
religious lines and has read much
about Buddhism and Islamism and
the other isms of the orient. He
sought a consulate to the far east
and got appointed to the Philip
pine slnnds. There he pursued
his studies.
From the Philippine islands Mo
hammed Webb having resigned his
consulate, went to Bombay and
Allahabad. He was made much of
by the 5 ohammedans and the out
come ef it t il is his mission to this
c unt y. He exj ects to have his
lew nr-ga ine in o,eratio;i in six
weeks. ,
Mohammed Webb has a wife and
children. He holds to the opinion
that the Koran does not necessarily
teach polygamy, and he will not
advocate polygamy in the United
States for reasons which are in
spired by bis own conscience as
well ns by the law—Atlanta Con
ti'ution.

A little face at the window,
When the lamps flash out in the
street,
A little pale face waiting
The coming of welcome feet;
A pressure of baby fingers,
A shimmer of golden hair,
A little laugh in the hallway,
A little trip on the stair.
A little pageant passing
Through the churchyard hush and
still,
A little home that is empty,
A little grave by the hill,
A little season of waiting,
Of weeping, and wiping of tears,
Till a new star gently rising
Shines over the valley of years.
In the gleam of whose morn’s awak
ing,
When the clouds and the shadows
part,
With a holier sunlight breaking
In peace on the mother's heart,
Sht will smile at the storm and dark
ness,
The clouds and the twilight star,
'Neath a sun that knoweth no setting,
Where the souls of her loved ones
arc,
