Counterfeit Change Milt.—'Within two or three
days past a large number of counterfeit change
bills of the Darien Bank have been put incircula-
tlon in this city—they can, however, be very cn
ally detected. The genuine bills are letter press
printing, on light paper—the counterfeits are from
on engraving, on darker and thicker paper, and
the letters have a boldcrappearance. The signs-
. ture-of the counterfeits Is much more contracted
and is placed at a greater distance from the word
Cashier, than In the genuine bills. The execu
tlon of the bills is ulso very bad—on the 12 1-2
cents, the steam boat differ* very materially from
that on the genuine ones—there is also considers
blc ditferencc in the appearance of the arms of
the state on the 50 cent bills. We could particu
larise many other parts of them which differ from
the true bills, but we are satisfied that any person
who examines one of them, will easily detect the
deception.
The Rogue Caught.—Since writing the above
we learn that a man named Davey Devoy, and
Ills w ife were apprehended.this morning on suspi
cion of being concerned in the circulation of the
above bills, and on examination, a number of them
were found in possession of the woman, and ten
(5 bills oftbe Franklin Bank,NewYork, and a $2
bill of the Bank of Augusta, signed Abel Mann,
Cusbicr, Charles Ross, President, were found in
tbe house. They were both examined before Jus*
Hco F.ppinger, and Davey was committed for tri
al, but there being no |>roof against the woman
(he was discharged. Davey has lately returned
from New York, where he is supposed to have
procured the bills.

“Acte York, Sept. 18,1824.—The good
people of this City have been busily em
ployed during the last week in paying
homage and gratitude to the “ Nation’s
Guest,” Gen. La Fayette. The lively
sensibility which animates the citizens of
this place, nnd the people throughout the
union, ut this visit of the friend of man,
and great benefactor of the American
family, loudly proclaims the injustice of
the assertion, that “Republics arc ungrate
ful.” From one extremity of the United
States to the other, a magnnimity of senti-
of no misconstruction—It is the voice of
joy and gratitude consecrating to poster!
ty the fame of an individual whose life hns
been regulated by the purest principles of
philanthropy, and who bus been eminent
ly instrumental in extending the blessings
of civil and religious liberty to ten millions
of people. Never since the adoption of
the federal government,1ms so rich a theme
of exultation been offered as that which
the arrival of Gen. La Fayette affords to
the virtuous nnd enlightened citizen, whilst
the moral force of the spectacle which it
presents, will reach the most unlettered
mind among us.
The General is now absent from the

SEA SERPENT.—Thc Salem Obser
ver gives the following account of the Sea
Serpent, token from a statement furnished
by Mr Philip Lefavour, the skipper of n
fishing vessel, belonging to Marblebcud
It is, says thc editor, the most particular
account we have yet seen, and as its au
thenticity is beyond djspute, it must satisfy
tbe most incredulous on this subject, that
there is a monster in tbe sea resembling a
serpent.
“ While on their late voyage, and about
six leagues from Marblehead, they fell in
with- him, and be was so near, that thc
skipper, when standing at thc helm, was
obliged to incline bis body, to look over
upon him. He- continued so near the
boat long enough to be harpooned an hun
dred times. The skipper and crew were
.satisfied that bis back is perfectly smooth
and that the protuberances heretofore at
tached toit, arc owing to his undulating
motion. His licad is as large as half a bar
rel. His tail is blunt as though it were
.cut square off, and of whitish color, grad
ually becoming darker till it exhibits the
-blackness of a black snake. He shifted
Ids posture several times, sometimes lay
ing at full length, when he appeared over
60 feet, at other times assuming, a spiral
form, resembling the worm of a still. He
changed his posture very easily. His
whole appearance was terrific, though he
seemed harmless.”
The correctness of this statement may
be depended on, for the skipper and crew
are men well known in Marblehaad, and
their veracity has never been impeached.

diately ordered to lower his boat, and
row in thc direction of the spot where the
cry was, which lie did, und th6re discov
ered a boat rowed by four men towurds
the shore, and hailed them, hut they gave
no answer—and before the man in Mr D’s

close in shore rowing for the city, nnd
when passing Mr D’s dock, were again
hailed by those who line! assembled in con
sequence of thc alarm, but the fellows
gave no unswer, bat pulled rapidly on
their course. There is therefore reason
to believe, that some person was murder
