lory of the introduction of tlie Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, will lie convinced that
tht proprietor has never feared die inyestir
galion of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the mcdiclno in secret. It also
evinces die prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicine from this Institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been Introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldermen Of the City of Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com
position caller! Swaim’s Pnnacoa, applied
to me, requesting me to slate what I know
about the introduction of Ins medicine into
ll;c AIMS House—aw I consider it a duty
to comply with Ids requ si.
Being President of tlio Board of Maim
gersof’die Alms House in the year 1820,
Mr. rfrvaim expressed in mo a wisli to un
dertake the euro of sunfo persons then in
tho house, whoso cases were given up ns in-
curable bv tlie medical eentlemen, that lie
was confident of cuying by'his medicine
those cases, anil would undertake some of
die most desperate—and would require no
other compensation thnu the satisfaction
to he derived ftpm tlie service rendered.
1 promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did So; hut I found that somoof
the medical gcntlemon in tlm house had
labored to prejudice them, as some of them
attempted to prepossess me against what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid
ering that as they wevo cases abandoned by
the medical men'wiiich were to bo opera
ted upon, no harm nt least would he done,
andlf euro was practicable.-the opportuni
ty might to bo afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which r understood that tlioy did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. O'lhera opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and look upon
myself whatever responsibility three was in
tlie case, and notified Mr: Swaim that 1
would accompany him, and did so. the
first caso selected was that of a woman,
whose appearance was horrib'e, and whoso
condition was so deplorable that the bs-
tients in the same room wished to have h
removed, and the evidence of ray own sen
ses justified their oomplaint. She was i
woman of about 30 ot ,32 years of age. her
right eye was alredy i.estroyed, tlio left
eve protruded more than half an inch out
of tlm socket, the flesh of the left c-hoek was
ono comploto ulcer, tho flesh of the nose
laid disappeared and left t|io nostrils two
naked holes, the uppei lip on tlie Jeft side
was destroyed, and the tcerh and gums
bare, anil the whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a state of dissolution; her appetite
had left Iny—sho represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr,Swaim said
he could cure lior; ho Could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but ho could
restore tlteloft eye and the mooth. ^
Ho undertook the case, and I ficquent-
ly attended him in his visits to the poor wo
man and sl.o was curod-nttd I ,havo fre

THIS valuablo Anti-dysen
teric and JVorm Medicine has
been used for these seven
years past, and its virtues are
universally acknowledged by
all who havo tried it, to bo far superior to
any other medicine ever employed for
most di eises children are subject to. It is
pcrlectly safe, and no child will refuse to
take it. It sel-Iom fails curing Dysentery,
Summer Complaint, Colic or Clioleia
Morbus, either ill grown persons or children
and it gives appetito to almost ail debilita
ted persons. Worms frequently iqfesbchil
(iron, aggravate their ntner diseases, nnd
are the chief causo of most /evert, bowel
complaints, and chronic and nervous rllseas
cs, incident to childhood, which arc so nu
merous and frequently fatal. It It much
regrotted that roost vermifuges ntnv in use'
arc injurious, and thousands of children are
swept oft’, or arc rendered feeble, pale and
enunciated through the first stage of life
—which leads on to pulmonary complaints
Sec. Sec. Sec.
Worms being especially apt to infest
persons of debilitated digestive organs and
emaciated constitution*, much mischief is
often done by tho ordinary worm medi
cines, which generally consist nf tlip strong
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, narco
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles ot
this kind may destroy worms, hut they do-
bililato the stomach, anil often materially
injure tho goncrnl health. Stvatsi’i Ver
mifuge has the peculiar advantage of de
stroying nnd removing worms from the
bowels without tho wcaheniiig consequen
ces of the stroiigor purgatives. &c.—and
it has, moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigor both to tlie stomach ami borrds
and organs of digestion—thorchy relieving
tlie general system from many troublesome
complaints. Il is by till* moans that sff

Those who are iff flip- habit of taking
much oftlio common muffs, (and thereby
