the Philadelphia Alms House lnfirmnry.
Those who read it, will lie convinced that
the proprietor lias never feared die invesli*

evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicihe from this institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been introduced.

myself whatever responsibility there was in
tiie case, and notified 'Mr..Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case stlected was that of a woman,
whose.appearance was h’orrib'e, and whose
condition was so deplorable that tiie pa

am tiie chief cause of most fel' r rr, bowel

mardiiA and frequently fatal. It is much
regretted flint itinst vermifuges now iu use
are injurious, and thousands of children ore

Worms being especially apt ta infest
persons of debilitated digestive organs and
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often dono by.tlie orAinnry wdrm. medi
cines, which generally consist of tho strong
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, dbrco-
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may destroy worms, but they de
bilitate the stotna'cli, and often materially
injure the general health. Swaim’s Ver
mifuge has tlili peculiar advantage of de
stroying nnd removing worms from tiie
bowels without tho weakening consequen
ces offlhe stronger purgatives, Ac—anil
i( lias, moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigor both to tlte stomach and bowels
uid organs of digestion-—thereby relieving
tlm general system from many troublesome
complaints. It \x hy this means that so
many grown persons have been relieved,
by its use, of different complaints—suppo
sing themselves to be in n decline, &c. &c.
This medicine will relieve bowel com
plaints or dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit
ing, sickness, pain or weakness in'tht sto
mach nr bowels, loss of appetite, either in
children or grown persons, in a few hours;
and it seldom fails curing chills anu fe
ver or fever ague. • No family ought,
or ever will be wiihdtjf it, after a trial.
Worms are capable of producing great
distnrhinana in tiie system. Not only do
they aggravate ordinary diseases when tljey
aro present, hilt they also gji’e rise tn a
igre.it variety of very alarming anoinnhms
1 affections. The whole train of spasmodic it
convulsive diseases may proceed from tho
irritation of worms in tiie alimentary canal
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, - tetanus, pa
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety itf other nervous and convulsive
affections, are not unfrequentiy the imme
diate effects of this causa Besides these
diseases, worms have also been known to
produce pleuritic and rheumatic pains,dys
entery. remitting fever, dropsy of liiu brain,
chronic and spasmodic cough, &c. Ac.
&c, -
Among the symptoms which indicate
t,he presonee of worms, tho following ate
»tlic most common and striking!—A pale,
loaden-cuiutirctl, and occasionally flusjied
countenance; a bluish streali under the
eyes, those are dull and heavy, the pupils
aro dilated nnd much contracted, the low
er eyelids and upper lip swell, especially
during the night while sleeping; great
itching in tho nostrils, which onuses the
patient to pickdiis nose; foul breath; dis
turbed sleep; during which tiie patient
grinds his teeth, is apt to scream our find
startup suddenly as if frightened: tingling
in the ears; giddiness; interrupted speech;
palpitation of tho heart n dry spasmodic
cough; irregular and deprived appetite;
being sometimes entirely suppressed, and
nt otliors exceedingly voracious; al domen
swelled and hard; looseness of tho bowels:
