To the Public.
I N consequence of the numerous (Vends
and impositions practised In reference
to my medicine, I am again induced to
change the form of nt) BOTTLES, In
future, tltp PANACEA will bo put up In
round bottles, fluted longitudinally, with
the following words, blown In the glass,
“Swaim’s Pa mace a, I'm lads," as repre
sented above.
Theso bottles are much stronger than
those heretofore used.aiid will have but nne
label, which covers the cork, with my own
slguaturo on it, to that the coi b cannot bo
drawn without destroying the signature,
without whiter none is genuine. The me-
dicino may consequently be known to be
genuine when my signaturo it visible; fo
counterfeit which, will be punishable at for-
* Jho increasing demand foPthis celebra
ted medioine lias enabled me to reduce flic
price to TWO DOLLARS'per bottle,thus
bringing U within thf reach of the indi
gent.
My Panacea requires no 'encomium; Its
astonishing effects and wonderful operation
hare drawn, both from Patients and Medi
cal Practitioners of the highest respectabi
lity, the most unqualified approbation, and
established for it a character which Envy’s
f ien, though dipped in gall, can never tarn-
in.
The false reports concerning tills vain
able medicine, which have been so diligently
circulated by certain Physicians,have their
origin either in ENVY, or in the sniscliier-
oui effect, of tbe SPURIOUS IMITA
TIONS.
The Proprietor pledges himself to the
Public, and gives them the most solemn
assurances, that this medicine contains
neither mercury nor any other deleterious
drug.
The public are cautioned not to purchase
my Panacea, except from myself, my ac-
credi.ed agents, nr persons ol*knowr Ji-
lectability: and all those will consequent-
y be without excuse, who shall purchase
from any other persons.
WM, SWAIM.
September, 18X8.
The following certificate givej the his
tory of the introduction oft he Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who.read it, will be convinced that
the proprietor has never feared the investi?
gation of physicians, or-endearored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
those who were so anxious ktrigigally to
exclude the medicine ftom this institution,

would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM'DUANE, Bbq.
One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Sivaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaim'f Panacea, applied
tome, requesting,me to state what I know
about the introduction of his medicine into
the Aims House—and .1 consider it a duty
to comply with his reqq -st. •
Being President of the Board of Mane
! ers of the Alms House in the year 1820,
i Ir. Swaim expressed to me a wish .to un
dertake tire cure of some persons then in
the house, whose cases were given up as in
curable by the medical gentlemen, that he
was confident of curing by his medicine
tltlllq cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require no
other compensation than the satisfaction,
to be derived from the service rendered.
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so; but I found that tome of
the medical gentlemen in the' house had
labored to prejudice them, as same'of them
attempted to prepossess me against what
they denominated quackery . Rome of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical men which were to be opera
ted upon, no harm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be afforded, but Ihei expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed-it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself whatevor responsibility tlieie was in
the case, and notified Mr. Sivnim that I
would accompany him, and did so. Tho
first case selected avas that of a woman
whose appearance was horrible, and whoso
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients in the same room wished to have her
removed, and tire evidence of rhy own sen
ses justified their oomplaint. She was a
woman of about 90 or 32 years of age, her
right eye was alredy destroyed, the left
eye protruded more than half an ineh out
of the socket, the flesh of the left cheek was
one complete ulcer, the flesh of the nose
had disappeared and left the nostrils two
naked holes, the tippet lip on the left side
was destroyed, and the teeth and gums
hare, and die whole face, as Reappeared to
me, in a state of dissolution; Iter appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. . MriPuaiin said
he could qpre her; he could not restores the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but he could
restore thelcft eye and the mouth.
He undertook the ease, dnd V frequent-
ly -attended him in his visits to the poor wo
man, and she was eared—and 1 have fre
quently seen her since, going about her
ordinary business with the alacrity .ulual
to a person of that ape; the deformity of
course remained; but all that remained
besides appeared healthful. 1 have con
fined myself to t|jis case, upon which I
was impossible to be mistaken, and for
borne to introduce any other circomstai,
ccs than what belong immediately to it.
