Minister had demanded his passports. Mr. Bu
chanan sent a telegraphic dispatch to tho Liver
pool agent ol tho New York associated press, just
belore tho Pacific sailed, contradicting the rumor
and stating that thero waa no loundation for it —
There was great excitement in England, amount
ing almost to a panic, in regard to a wur with tho
United States. Tho malicious articles ol tho Lon
don Tunoa had been copied into aud exaggerated
bjr tho provincial press, causing great uneasiness,
and energetic protests had been sent into Gov
ernment against involving tho country in a disas
trous war with America. Tho public mind con
tinued excited and uneasy up to (ho departure of
the Pacific.

mes. Both parties woro preparing to go into win
ter quarters.
The Allies had roiirod to their former post ions,
in anticipation of an attack from the Russians, put
it waa unlikely that any further operations would

appointed Commander-in-Cliief of the British
forces in tho Crimea,in tho place ol Con. Simpson.

morning was caused by the burning ol Willett's

Indian War on tub Pacific—According to iho
last accuiima from tho Pacific,tho Indians in Califor
nia and Oregon were giving much trouble, it is
estimated that fifty white men had been killed in
Rogue River Valley within two weeks. Two bat
tles are recorded. In the first forty Indians were
killed, together with .Major Lupton, who com
manded the volunteers fighting ngaint them; and
in the other thirty Indians and ten U. S. Volun
teers. Disturbances among the Indians ulso exist
throughout the extreme Northern portion «,| Cali
fornia, and in Oregon and Washington Territo
ries.
Presbyterian Church at Atlanta—Wo
learn from the Atlanta Republican, that a "revi
val" haa been progressing in tho Presbyterian
Church in that place, and mat 41 communicants

Wilke* chairman, muds roport on aovoral bills on-
trusted to them this morning. Tho bill increas
ing salaries of tho Judges of tho Suproino Court, to
$4,000,—to apply to Judges hereafter elected; and
tho bill to restrict and define the pardoning powers
ol thu legislature, wero both rolumod without
amendment, and their passage recommended.
Tho special order of tho day—hill to pardon
Jacob Mercer—was thou lukuii up, and postponed
lo Tuesday nuxt.
A message front the Senate was received and
road, stating that tho Sonate had roaolvod to pro
ceed to tho election of a Bank Director, and Judge
ol iho Supremo Court, on Tuesday next; and ask
ing tho concurrence of tho House (heroin. Mr.
Dawson moved that tho House concur. Mr.
Lowis of Hancock objected, lie wisliud the elec
tion of a Judge postponed until tho bill increasing
the Judges' salary had been actud on. Mr. Dawson
withdrew his motiun; whereupon, it was rouuwcd
by Mr. Fields, who could not aoo uny reason lor
delaying the olcdion. Mr. Lowis ottered a ren-
aon, ii tho salary woro raised, other and abler com
