COTTON PICKINGS.
Furnished (or Dally Herald Readers
by Clark & Co.
Liverpool opened about as expected
—8 to 10 lower on this crop, and 7 to
8 on the next Sales 12,000. Spots
showed a loss of 12 points.
The market shows a good deal of
strength In the face of a good many
discouraging circumstances. Foremost
was the San Francisco horror, which
grows rather than diminishes with
time, and which affecting the stock
market also affected the cotton trade,
came as a great public disaster, which
may have consequences of immediate
concern to the cotton trade or itself,
though no one Is looking for anything
serious In this direction.
Everything considered It was sur
prising there was not a greater de
cline.
Schlll was an early seller of July.
The weather news from the bolt
yesterday was generally very favor
able.

NEW ORLEAN8 COTTON LETTER,
By wlro to Clurk A Co.
New OrleanB, La., April 20.
After displaying considerable weak
ness on the opening In consequence of
further liquidation and the reported
soiling of winter months by southern
Interests, options In the later session
stcndled somewhat and closed 7 points
lower than yesterday. Spot sales of
12,000 bales were more encouraging,
even though at n decline of 12 points.
The early Btrength In evidence on the
opening of the local market was partly
due to some little buying for outside
accounts, probably on the part of those
who rcmnlned short over night and
partly owing to some support by the
more prominent bulls, but bear tac
tics soon thereafter became sufficiently
general to cause a decline, which In
turn was checked by later reports of
heavy rains In Toxns.
The nervousness of the market be
came clearly apparent In the erratic
course pursued by futures in today's
trading. The gloom caused by the
disaster to the western metropolis
still hangs over the market, but grad
ually Is becoming less os It slowly be
comes apparent thnt the industries
and finances of the country have not
experienced an Irreparable loss. THe
generally heavy rains In the west, es
pecially In Texas, . have doubtless
caused some dclny In planting, while
tho quietness of the spot market both
hore and In the Interior are Influences
of paramount Importance in shaping
the course of tho public opinion, but
one condition that the present market
stands sorely In need of Is the broad
ening Influence of outside speculation.
Yours very truly,
GIBERT & CLAY.
A Trifle Better.
Professor—Pray excuse me for keep-
lnp you waiting for a few minutes,
gentlemen. Unfortunately I have come
without the manuscript of my lecture,
but I have sent ray little boy for It.
Little Boy (entering the hall)—Mother
says she cau’t find tho manuscript of
your lecture, but I’ve brought tho book
you copied It from.
A\rfnl Thoughtt
Molly—Papa, I wish you’d close the
door of your room when gentlemen are
calling on me. Your snores are some
thing fenrful. Dad—Well, It won’t
hurt ’em. Molly—Perhaps not but
they might think It’s hereditary.
An ImIiiiicI City.
Greater New York consists of forty -

the larger: Manhattan Island, Long Is

Island, Hiker’s Island, North Brother

land. Randall’s Island, Ward's Island,
BeiTian's Island, Governors Island,
Barren Island and Coney Island. Many
small ones In Jamaica bay have large
names. One inland Island, Marble
Hill, near Klngsbridge, has been made
by the government channel cut through
on the Harlem river Improvements.
Untidily Effective.
“Sometimes,” said the merchant, “I
feel like the poet who wanted a lodge
In some vast wilderness. I yearn for
solitude and silence.”
Well,” replied bis friend sympathet
ically, “It’s an expensive taste to grat
ify, but you might start in by taking
your advertisement out of the news
papers.”—Washington Star.
