isters of the lending Baltimore hotels
today read like a directory of the Ro
man Cntholic church In America. Page
after page of the registers Is fllled
with the ■ names of archbishops, bish
ops ahd monslgnors, abbots and lead-
of tlio various ecclesiastical or
ders, all of whom have come to attend
tomorrow’s celebration of the cente
nary of the laying of the corner-stone
of tho old Baltimore cathedral, the
seat of the primacy of’ the American
hierarchy, the great hall of legislation
for tho church In tho United States.
The gathering of prelates Is the
moRt notable this country has seen
since the Inst plenary council, which
was held in Baltimore In 1884. White
largo nmnbor of tho visitors have
found accommodation nt the hotels,
ninny others nro being entertained by
private families.
For more than a year plans for the
celebration have been In preparation,
and those who have the affair in hand
have been occupying all their spare
time In arranging the tremendouB
amount of detail necessary to Its suc
cessful culmination. The ceremonies
will he characterized by Impressive
solemnity and a magnificence that will
flttlgnly lay claim to comparison with
some of the splendid events that have
given fame to St. Peter’s at Rome.
The program of the celebration will
begin with an Imposing procession of
the priests nnd prelates around the
cathedral block tomorrow morning.
The line of march 1ms been extended
to allow the thousands who will strive
to see the distinguished churchmen
plenty of opportunity. The order of
the.procession will be as follows: .

Censer-Bearer.

Cathedral Sanctuary Boys.
Seminarians.
Regulars In Habit of Their Order.

throne, and directly opposite, also oc

delegate. He will be similarly arrayed
In vestments. Between the two thrones
and high altar will he the archbishops,
bishops and abbots, while the monsig
norl will be seated on the gospel side
In front of the cardinal’s throne along
the sanctuary railing. Members of
the faculty of the Cntholic University
will he placed on the epistle side near
the sanctuary railing.
Archbishop J. M. Fnrley, D. D, of
New York, will sing the. solemn ponti
fical mass, and after this x celebration
hlB grace, the venerable Archbishop P.
J. Ryan, D. D., of Philadelphia, will
preach. At the end of the ceremony
the recession will be In reverse of the
procession, but the same route will be
used.
The start of the evening procession
will ho from the cardinal’s residence,
and the route within the cathedral
grounds used. His Grace, Most Rev
erend S. G. Messmer, D. D., archbishop
of Milwaukee, will sing the solemn
pontifical vespers at 8 o’clock, and the
sermon will be delivered by Archbish
op J. J. Glennon, p. D-, of St. Louis.

ediction of the blessed sacramenL

main social event, however, will be
the celebration In the evening at the

Since Its dedication, in 1821, the
cathedral has been-the scene of many
conspicuous-and historical gatherings.
No churoh In the United States has
witnessed so many consecrations- ot
bishops and ordinations of priests at
have taken place within its walls.
Twenty-six bishops have been conse
crated before Its altar, and many of
these prelates have occupied a lead
ing position among the American hier
