SHIP BUILDING,
tlrcnswich as a Locality.
Torfnnny yeara we lisve pondered
f nd iuqhired why tliis luonlity could
not be utilized in tlie mutter of ship
building. On Monday last wc hi«l an
interview with C'ajit. M. Brown, 'of
Bnngor, Me., mold end experienced
(hip builder, who comes among ns for
the purpose of securing ship timber for
the ship yard of Mcrsth. Oaks, Sou &
Co., in Maine. His cargo is now being
cut by • the St. Simon’s mills. He is
delighted with our climate and nil he
lias seen, nod after a careful inspection
qf our Harbor and surroundings, will
return soon to liis home to hike imme
diate steps looking to the establish
ment of a ship yard on fit. Simons.
Wo see ne reason why such on enter
prise shnnld ne# he an immense saving
to builders. No better places are to be
had fortlio erection of ship yards than
ulong the shores of onr Harbor. Its
depth of water, easy access to oeeau,
close proximity to forests of pine and
live oak, saw mill facilities, depth of
water on Bar, mild and salubrious cli-
tuato, cheap and direct water commu
nication with New York, all conspin
to render it the place of .places fit for
this business.
Freights from New York, too, would
l>e less than to Maine—the great ship
building State—from the simple fact
t hat scores of vessels come this way
for lumber empty, and would be glad
to bring, as ballast, wliat ship builders
would need from that point, or at least,
at a very small compensation. Thus
you observe that being rid of the freight
now charged on lumber to the present
ship yards, and getting Now York
freights ot reduced figures, this point
offers superior advantages to any wish
ing to cugngc in this lmsinc.ia,
