Tlio Grand Jury, Fall Term,
1878, respectfully submit aa their
GENERAL PRESENTMENTS:
That they have examined the
books of all the. County Officcm
that there is a marked improve
ment in the manner of keeping
same, as compared to a few years
post. IVe find the books of the
Ordinary, Sheriff-, and Clerk of the
Court neatly kept, and papers well
arranged; tho books of the Comity
Court welland, apparently, correct
ly kept; the Judge of this Court
has submitted a report, giving the
details of the business of his Court
to November. The books of all tho
Justices of tho Peace have been ex
amined, and appear to he correct.
The liooks of the Board of Educa
tion arc neatly kept, mid appear to
be correct. The Jail lias been ex
amined, and the same found in a
safe and cleanly condition.
The Committee on Kouds and
Bridges report same in good order,
excepting bridges in Buffalo
Swamp.
Wo respectfully call the attention
of the Tax Receiver to the almost
unitorin neglect in the past, in re
quiring tax returns to lie made in
accordance with law, failing to have
tie property so designated that its
location may be understood, nlso
failing to require owncnf.or agents
to give in their property at a .fair
valuation. The neglect of these
matters in the past has diminished
the amount that ought to be real
ized from taxes, und imposed a
heavy burden upon those making
fair and honest returns of taxuble
projK-Tty.
.•Wo have elected Messrs. J. M.
Couper, J. 11. Habersham, und M.
JJ i J. Colson, Commissioners of Ruuds
and Revenues. *
Wo liavo elected Mr. James W
Muiioc County School Commission'
er for 27th District.
Tin- Cofhmissioncrs of Roads and
Revenues submitted their annual
to the Board. Tho attorneys’ fees
and costs, to secure these claims,
have, for the past two years, ex
ceeded the entire amount received
as income from all the property of
the Board. .For the p;u, ■ two years
this fund has been it cause of ex
pense instead of a source of income,
and your Board can see no practi
cal way to avoid it. 4
The entire amount received from
city Council of Brunswick for rent
al und taxes on Town Commons
for years 1877 and 1878 have been
8238 30, about one-fourth of tho av
erage of former years. To effect a

While this fund appears large,
ins benefit has been derived (tom
same the past two years. No
the Board yielded over 8300, to
which they believed they wore en
titled, conditioned iqion paying
over to Board ail monies received
from ground rents after January 1,
1878. Tlio City Council and Board
of Education differ in rcg.g'd to
tliis settlement, tiie City CouncL*
claiming all leases, etc., on Town
Commons which accrued prior to
1878, though they may be collected
after that date. Tiie Board of Ed
ucation contend that under provis
ions ' of tho City Charter all
monies . received from ground
rents of Town Commons must he
applied to Educational purposes,
und that Council have no right to
(dispose of these rents, etc., in any
other manner. Tiiis matter still
remains unsettled, and its decision
will probably determine tlio time
for which the schools can be kept
open tl*c present scholastic year.
We havo petitioned tiie Legisla
ture to pay over tho uncollected
school quota for Glynn county, for
1878. Representative Lamb writes
it hi likely to he considered a bocal
Bill, nml thinks it cannot be acted
on until next session, in which
case wo cannot receive it in time to
he upplied to present scholastic
year.

of the Grand Jury of a former

will use up a good wagon' iu two or
three seasons, while we know of
wagons still good which have been
in constant use on the farm for over
thirty years. They want well made
ont of good, wfcll-sensuued material,
and then were woll painted. No
geut^al repairs have been necessary
for us's^ou as a bolt was broken it
was replaced., or if a burr became,
loose it was tightened. It is tbs

The loss from tbe failure to keep
them well greased amounts to olurge
sain, iu the aggregate. Aud with
hght wagons, neglecting to pat
leather washers on the arms to make
the wheels ruu steady, subjects
them to unusual straiu and permits
them to wear rapidly. Paint is n
fur better preserver of wagons than
of buddings. Wo' hare had long-

Borne farmersaro machinists and
mid scum to keep their implomenls
iu order with little trouble aud small
expense, while others aro always
doing imperfect work and destroy-^^J
ing their m iohiuery by using it ’
when it is ueediug repairs. The
great fault with most of onr mow
ing machines is that they aro not
used with sufficient cure. They
work well when new but soon get
out of order. AJbnrr work's loose
ut a vital point permitting wear, or
tho frame or somo portion of tho
bearings-got out of lino, and friction
ia increased. It bus been the study
of machinists to make a perfect
working mower.' They have not
given sufficient study to tbe making
of a durable one. Wo mast make

making them promptly as they aro
needed.—Husbandman.
