Wo have advocated! for some time
tho propriety of our people investing
in ship building right hero At borne.
Somo stops Lave been taken in that
direction by Captain Barney Dart, m
evinced in tbo boilding of tbo little
r Baby, now so eseential to the
oomfort of passengers to and from
SL Simons Mills. Carrying ont the
general idea, Messrs. Littlefield
A Tieon and some of onr pilots bare
invested their money in the bark
American Eagle and to-day own the
controlling interest in that etaanch
craft, which now hails from Bruns
wick, Go. Another project is now on
foot, looking in tbe same general di
rection. Captain Lake, of the Graco
Yandnscn, in onr port thia week, is
baildiog, at Petti's Island, S. J., a
il to bo used in tho coastwise
trade, in which several of onr citizens
have taken an interest; among llicm>
three of onr colored frieods—viz: Har
ry Tattnall and Columbus Hibbard,
stevedores, who take together ono*
sixty-fourth, and Alfred Johnson,
who takes oue-sixty-fourth. Tho keel
is now laid and Captain Lako carries
forward at once, the planking and ribs
(yellow pine) to push forward tbe
work. She is to cost about $28,000.
Dr. Madden, R. B. Reppard and oth
ers are putting tbeir money in this en
terprise, and wo trust it is only a fore-
runner of similar schemes. Our judg
ment dictates, however, that it will bo
cheaper to build right here, and wo

formed for that purpose. We have
everything boro that will bo wnntcd
oxcept snilw, rigging, etc. True wo
have few or no ship carpenters, bat
these could bo secured from tho fro
zen north. Livo oak, pine and white
oak for bull, ribs, keel, stem posts,
planking, railing, eta, ami cypress for
yards, masts, etc., are to l>c found
right at hand, with saw milk near by
to manufacture tho same. Wbat say
somo of oar euterpriziog ones ? Tbo
