BRUNSWICK, - GEORGIA:
SATURDAY MORBINO, SEPTEMBER 24. 1881.
OUR DEAD PRESIDENT.
At lust we are called upon to write
tho sad words—the President is dead.
His fight for life for gallant, and u na
tion’s prayers went up to Him who
governs tho affairs of men to spare
him to tho country.
A largo hearted, broad minded
man, a thorough student of his coun
try’s history, an apt learner of the les
sons that history taught, freo from
bitterness, fall of an exalted ambition
to be tho President of tho whoJo coun
try, his inaugural announced a policy
which was welcomed by all well-wish
ers of their country as tho dating of a
now era, iu which tho voico of section
alism should bo hushed, and peace
and business activity and prosperity
fill onr land with gladness.
His family relations, so tender and
true, gave brightest promise of tho fu
ture, for the man who combined so
many qnalities desirable in tho Presi
dent's office, and was at tho samo timo
a loving and devoted son, husband
and father, could not make u bad
President.
His choice of Cabinet officers, tested
by the touchstone of experience, was
wise, and their actions patriotic. A
financial success in tho treasury,
sweeping reforms in tho Postmaster
Goneral's office, a wise and liberal aud
evon brilliant administration of tho
State Department, a firm detormins.
tion in tho Attorney Goncral^ office
to uuoarth all frauds and punish tho
authors, mado the opening of the ox-
ecutivo term, short as it hus been, u
help to the country.
Tho President's bravo and deter
mined contest with tho machine poli
ticians, and its successful result, was
another indication thut our conutry
had fallen upon good times, and that
a now ora hud truly dawnod upon our
land, so long rout by political dissen
sion and strife.
All this bright promise was blotted
out by the hand of the assasaiu, and
for two months and a half fifty mil
lions of people liavo anxiously waited,
hoped, feared and prayed. Who con
gazo upon this spectacle of a vast
country without a chief executive offi
cer for nearly two months and a half,
moving along quietly and peaceably,
without ovon a panic iu tho lluancial
world, and not admire tho institutious
which ruako this possible.
The sud nows of bis death has come
—tbo Vice President assumes tbo du
ties of tho office. Lot us hope aud
trust thut his udmi: able conduct duriug
the past \voary day® of illness and of
watching, are the promise that in the
Presidency ho will sink the partizau
and bo tho President of the whole
country, from M'.'.iuo to Texas, from
the Atlantic to tho Pacific. Ho has,
if lie will do this, an opportunity
which may well fill tho measure of
any man’s ambition.
A whole j>coplo sympathize with tho
bravo woman who, forgotting hor owu
illness iu her great love for him we
knew as President, she as loving bus-
baud and father, hastened to his bed
side, and there has demeaned herself
so nobly, keeping back the team,
meeting tho loved husband's gazo
with a calm ami quiet face, even with
smiles, when her heart must have boeu
wrung with anxiety and fear, aud who
bus now the admiration and respect
of all who have watched hor through
these weary weeks of nursing, illus
trating us she has tho noblest qualities;
of true womanhood.

This Legislature 1ms been eminent
ly practical. There has been no timo
wasted in debate. Measures of great
er im|H*rtauco to Georgia than can Ik)
found in all the legislation of the past
ton years have been adopted. There
has been a disposition expressed ini
from the mountains. I very polite, aud showed us tbo Little
imtHin—D»hlotv*«tt—•'Tho Giant at work, washing out great
rocks from the mountain side two feet
in diameter. Nothing living can
stand before this pipe a minute. The
water has a pressure of two hundred
feet, and is conveyed from a moan-
tain stream, the Yahoola river. This
aqueduct is tbirty-fivo miles long, and
cost IGOOJXX). One cannot form any
idea of this gigantic undertaking un
less hero to see its operations. Water
is elevated and placed in reservoirs at
a heightb of 2G0 to 300 feet above the
mines. This water is sold at twelve
and one-balf cents per miners' inch,
to-wit, one square inch of water by
four inches pressure. About one and
one-half cubic feet per minute are de
livered to the mines. Some six or
eight mineB are supplied by this aque
duct. The cost per ton for mining
and milling is about twenty conts. A
ton of ore will yield of pure gold from
30e to $20. Gold dust hero is worth
00c per pennyweight.
I would suggest to our south Geor
gians, who have never visited a iniue,
that whon in a mining country they
would bo well repaid if they would
apend a day or two seeing them, as
now shafts and tunnels nro iu process
of construction daily.

Mr. Editor: In my last I promised
to give an account of our trip to Blood
Mountain, distant from this spring
about fifteen or twenty miles. Our
party consisted of five gentlemen from
different Statos. Our buckmnu was
ready and wo were all seated by G. a.

lnrly so. It follows the grand old
Chostatee river for milos, and numer
ous were tbo beautiful cascades, fall
ing some twenty-fivo, some fifty, some
one hundred feet, and sparkling in
the snn like a thousand diamonds.—
The growth is maple, poplar, hem
lock, cbostnnt, oak, white pine, etc.,
and some of these trees appear to be
ono thousand years old, and are tbo
largest that I bavo evor seen. One
tree that I measured, called the “big
poplar,” measures nt its base twenty-
eight feet.
Arriving nt Mr. John Gnrrnrd's, at
foot of the monutniu, wo leftour back,
and took mountain ponies, as tbo as
cent is very steep. Twice wo wero
compelled to dismount and luad our
horses, for ono false stop would have
sent us hundreds of foot down. It is
three miles by tbo trail from tho foot
to the summit.
Reaching the summit, the view is
indescribably grand There aro but
two other knobs in Georgia ms high

mountain, in Rabun county, nnd the
other is Enoto roountnin, iu Towns
county. Hero you arc 4,070 feet high

a mncli lower temperature than at tho

aud is gone without reverberation;
here you buvo a view of Cleveland, teu
