Elijah Bird. It will be recollected that the
Georgia Legislature, a couple of years ago, grant
ed a pardon to the above named individual, who ;
had been convicted of the murder of his brother
in-law, Dr. X. (i. Hillburn. The New Orleans cor
respondent of the Columbus Enquirer, writing un- I
tier date of January 17th, gives an item of his
whereabouts and manner of conducting himself, |
after enjoying the legislative clemency of this State.
The correspondent savs:
“ Crime and intemperance still stalk abroad in
this city. A man was murdered on board the
steamer Republic, on Saturday last, and no one or
the boat communicated anything to the police, in
relation to the matter, until the succeeding Mon
day, thus giving the murderer time to escape. The
name of the murderer is Elijah Bird, who, it is
said, abs aid -d from Georgia, a few vears since,
where lie had committed two murders.* It is said
that he has wealthy relations living in Georgia.''
Political Geometry.—lt is an axiom in Geome
try, that things that are equal to the same thing,
are equal to one another. By inspecting the votes j
given for Speaker in Congress, it will he seen that '
Mr. Pennington votes for Mr, Banks, and Mr.
Banks votes for Mr. Penning:mu; they are therefor*
equals politically. Mr. Henry Fuller also votes for
Mr. Pennington, therefore he is politically equal to
Mr. Pennington ; but we have shown that Mr.
Banks and Mr. Pennington are equal, and things
that are equal to the same thing, are equal to each
other, and Mr. Banks and Mr. Fuller being both
equal with Mr. Penniugton, they are equal to each
other. Messrs. Foster and Trip; cj vote for Mr.
Fuller, and as we have proved Mr. Fuller to be the
equal of Banks, therefore Messrs. Foster and Trippe
are the equals of Banks, fid. Union.
Suit' Kertch.—We reported this vessel yester
day as being on tire at Venus' Point, about ten milts
below the city. We are informed by her Consign
ees that they succeeded in extinguishing the tire
by fU'ing her hold with water. About three hun
dred and fifty hales of cotton, a portion of her car
go, have been brought up to the city more or less
i damaged. The lumber was not reached by the
; flames and is uninjured. A survey of the vessel
and cargo wii! be made to-day, and the full extent
of the damage ascertained,— Sc.v. Hep., 27.

COTTON.—There has been a very fair business
done in the Cotton trade the past week, consider
ing the extreme inclemency of the weather. Since
our last weekly review, we have had Liverpool ac
counts by the Africa and Baltic, which have de
pressed prices. We think }(c. may be safely stated
to be the extent of the decline in this market. The
I higher grades of Cotton are getting very scarce, j
i and consequently the demand for them has in
; creased. The lower qualities are not sought for,
j and prices for Cotton below middling may be re- ;
ported as merely nominal.
There i; a considerable quantity of inferior and ;
ordinary Cotton, impaired by the long continued 1
unfavorable weather, which commands from 6 1 j to
i 7}4 cents, when sales can be effected. We submit j
the following quotations, as near the condition of
tiie market, for quality and price, as we have been
I enabled to obtain : Strictly fair 9 cents ; middling j
fair s b ; good middling 8 Vj; low middling to '
middling s . stained I}£CdJlsi cents,
i The receipts of Cotton at all the Southern ports, I
j continue steadily to increase, and there are very
few persons who estimate the present crop at anv
: thing under 3,500,000 bates, while many are dis
j posed to place it at still higher figures.
| (BUSINESS. We have no very gratifying results
, of trade or business to report, in consequence of
I the unfavorable weather, which invested almost
| everything with un icy garniture. Sleet and snow |
i has been succeeded by muddy sireets, and man
’ and horse jog along at a very reluctant pace. Bu

THE CRITERION;
A LIT HR AIIV AND CRITICAL WEEKLY JOURNAL,
16 PlUjeS, 4 /o,
¥M7AS commenced on the third of November, ;
w V 1-55, and has thus far received very gen- '
eral approbation. Anxious to extend its influence, I
and place it upon a substantial basis of support, j
the Publisher desires most earnestly to direct the j
attention of the thinking public of America to its I
claims upon their consideration.
The main feature of the CRITERION is its Hr
cities of Current Literature. In this department
arc given thorough and able criticisms of all the I
most important books as they are issued, pointing j
out their chief characteristics, and indicating their
moral tendencies, thus keeping its readers inform- |
ed of all new publications which deserve their at
tention.
IT ALSO CONTAINS
Copious Intelligence of Affairs in the Literary j
World; Gossip concerning Books and Writers' ; j
Announcements of contemplated Publications; and !
Lists of New Books issued in America and Europe, j
The Drama, Music, Fine Arts and Science, also r
receive attention, and several columns of carefully ,
selected and agreeable matter are given in each j
number. In addition to the above .there is a de
partment of Miscellanea for reading, of an enter- j
taining character, carefully selected from new books i
and the ablest reviews, and a weekly collection of j
Notes and Queries, which contains a great variety j
of curious and valuable information.
It is confidently believed that a journal such as j
the CRITERION, cannot fail to have a good effect .
upon our national literature, and to some extent 1
upon our national character. It will he found es
peciallv valuable in directing the attention of youth
to works of real excellence, and encouraging an
appreciation for valuable reading, which is being!
rapidly destroyed bv the circulation of superficial
and sophistical books. To the reading man the I
literary intelligence alone must, render it very do- :
sirable; and to all who wish to promote an ini- I
provement in taste, the encouragement of merit, I
and an uncompromising condemnation of vieious i
style, mock sentiment, and evil principles, such an i
enterprise cannot at least, should not be indif- j
ferent.
To members of Historical, Literary and Scugx- I
it Etc Societies, Lyceums and Debajim; Clubs,
the subjects discussed in this paper will, at all i
times, prove of peculiar interest, and it is the de- '■
sign of the editors to thoroughly canvass, from i
time to time, those important philosophical ques '
tions which agitate aii inquiring minds, correcting I
false theories, and encouraging profitable invest!- 1
gation.
The CRITERION is published at t-3 per annum, !
payable yearly, half yearly, or quarterly, in ad j
vance. Specimen copies supplied, on application !
