were present from Rome, Cfeva
l Spring and Quteroville, while peo-
’ pie of our own commanity lent their
presence right liberally. 'The audi
ence numbered about two hundred
and fifty persons. Miss Hunt was
lint given a stout walking cane and
placing a hand so as to barely clasp
the end, gentlemen from the audi
ence were requested to bold it. The
cane soon became so charged with
the strange power that as many as
could grasp it could not bold it. The
experiment was tried repeatedly
with any number of peraoos, fro(n one
to seven, grasping the cane, and the
power only varied in its apparent
strength but at no time failed to be
manifest. Several canes were broken
in the attempts made to hold them.
A chair was next experimented with,
Miss Hnrst laying her hands lightly
upon some part of ft, .while stttn
attempted to hold it, hut the power
again manifested itself and baffled
effort. She held in each hand a twig
with loops formed by bending their
ends. These automatically, without ;
effort from her, came together and ;
interlocking, with violence were
broken instantly into the smallest
pieces. The success of the several
feats was so prononneed as to con- ,
vince even the most skeptical of the ]
audience that she possessed an un-
usual and very strange power, and ,
the exhibition, withal, We believe, '
was gratifying and satisfactory to all
witnesses.

Gin House Burned.
On Friday night, 28th of Decem
ber, a gin boose on Mr. G. W. Feath
ers ton’s place, a few miles from town
on the Cave Spring road, was burn
ed, having been fired by an incendi
ary. The house contained about two
thousand bushels of cotton seed, bed
sides a lot of tools, all of which were
lost. The fire occurred about twelve
o’clock. Awhile before, some par
ties passing the road saw a light
burning in the house, but supposed
some one of the place was there, and
did not investigate. Before the house
was consumed it was discovered that
a window had been prized open. The
incendiary, it is supposed, threw a
torch into the midst of the cotton
seed and left.
Municipal Election.
The municipal election last Thurs
day passed off unattended by excite
ment, and with less than usual inter
est. There was some contest for the
office of Mayor between Mr. Rich
ardson, who headed the citizen’s tick
et, and Judge Enlow, who developed
into an- active canvasser. The fol
lowing are the officers as elected:
Mayor, A. Richardson; Recorder, L.
8. Ledbetter; Counoilmen, R. H.
Wheeler, C. E. Scruton, J. E. Goode,
J. W. Merrell, and J. W. Barr. In
such competent and worthy hands,
we believe Cedartown’s affairs will
be well looked after.

I»ast Sunday being the centennial
oT the organization of the Methodist
Episcopal church in the United
States, appropriate remarks teaching
the history, the growth and the
work of the church constituted the
discourse of Rev. J. W. Roberts on
that day. In the hundred years
past Methodism has increased from a
few scattering congregations, with a
membership of 15,000 to a denomina
tion claiming 4,000,000 members—
forming the hugest Protestant church
in America.
