THE CHRISTMAS BOAT.
A bplendid Entertainment at the Bap-
Church Christmas Night.
The exercises at the Baptist
church Christmas night wore of
a highly enjoyable character.
Notwithstanding the inclement
weather, a very large crowd was
present and a well arranged pro¬
gram was well and
carried out.
Mrs. Harwell presided at the
Jfrgati and the choir, composed
of Mesdames Young and Little¬
field, Miss "8 Jimmie Parrish,
Maggie Elliott, Moll in Lasringer
and Messrs Booth, Roberts and
Brown, furnished splendid music.
Mr. W. O. Roberts was master
of ceremonies and performed his
duties with dignity and grace.
A pretty song by Ruby Elliott
was the first on the program.
May belle Passmore then read
an admirable paper on “Origin
of Christmas.’’
After a song, Leila Woodard
recited splendidly.
“Christmas Bella,” a song by
the children, was well rendered.
Maxine Young then recited in
a sweet manner.
Mary Will Wakeford and Hazel
B<>urquin captivated the audi¬
ence by their recitation.J
The next on the program w as a
song by the choir.
*‘M«rry Christmas,” by the
children was well rendered and
then Santa Claus appeared. Mr.
S. J. Harwell appeared in this
role and made a good one. In¬
stead of having a Christmas tree
n boat had been built and tin
prcseii fi were deposited in it. A
large number of gifts were de¬

DIED ON CHRISTMAS DAY.
Little Tom Crosby Passes Away at His
Home Last Friday.
Tom Crosby, the twelve-year-
old son of Mr. Buck Crosby, died
last Friday after a long illness,
three miles south of the city.
He had never been a healthy
child and was finally attacked hy¬
dropsy, which killed him. The
funeral was held at the city-
cemetery Saturday.
Mr. Crosby had a little boy
about five years old to die on the
25th of November four years ago
and justmie mouth later—Christ¬
mas day—his grown son was
taken away.
The family have the sympathy
of many friends in their sorrow.
MARRIAGES AT MASSEE.
Miss Coon and Mr. Booker and Mr.
Coon and Miss Tyson.
Massee had two marriages
ing Christmas week. The first
one occurred Wednesday and uni¬
ted the lives of Miss Emma S.
Coon, a pretty and attractive
young lady, and Mr. Booker, of
Fitzgerald, the ceremony taking
place at the home of the bride.
The other one occurred Thurs¬
day and Mr. Dave C 0011 and Miss
Jessie Tyson, a popular young
young lady, were the contracting
parties.
Both couples have the best
wishes of many friends.
Don't Worry.
This is easier said than done,
yet it may be of some help to
consider the matter. If the cause
is something over which you have
no control it is obvious that wor¬
rying will not help the matter in
the least. On the other hand, if
within vour control you have on¬
ly to act. Wlmn you have a cold
and fear an attack of pneumonia,
buy a bottle of Chamberlain’s
Cough Remedy and use it judic¬
iously ar.d all cause for worry as
to tho outcome will quickly dis¬
appear. There is no danger of
pneumonia when it is used. For

Public Installation.
Rev. W. W. Webb, of Haliira,
went up to Tifton Monday and
installed the officers of the Ma¬
sonic lodge there. The exercises
were public and were of a very
interesting character.
Mrs. Johanna SoJerliohn, of
Fergus Falls, Minn , fell and dis¬
located her shoulder. She had a
surgeon get it ba.:k in place as
soon as possible, but it was quite
sore and pained her very much.
Her son mentioned that he had
seen Chamberlain’s Pain Balm
advertised for sprains and sore-
ness, and she asked him to buy
her a bottle of it, which he did.
It quickly relieved her and on-
ubled her t«> sleep which she had
not done for several days. The
son was so much pleased with til o
relief it gave bis mother that h o
has since recommended it

BIG FIRE AT VALDOSTA.
Three Good Rcsidenees Ware Burned
Last Saturday Night.
Valdosta, Ga.. Dec. 27,—One of
the worst fires that has occurred
in the residence portion of Vul-
dosta in many years began in the
residence of Jack Brown, a white
citizen, this morning alwmt 1 o'¬
clock and consumed it and the
homes of Messrs. W. J. Durant
and Joseph Stump before it could
be checked.
The night was cold and a stiff
wind was blowing when the alarm
wav sounded. The firemen made
a quick run to the fire, but were
handicapped by the light pres¬
sure on the mains, though they
made a gallant fight.
The house occupied by Brown
was falling in before the alarm
was sounded. The Durant home
was just a few feet from it and
the Stamp residence was very-
close. The Brown and Durant
cottages were owned Jjy J, A.
Dasher, Jr., and were insured
for $1,000 each. The Stump res¬
idence was the old Mosely place
and.was one of the largest resi¬
dences in the city, being about
the first of the handsome modern
homes to ba built here. It was
valued at $ 1,000 and was insured
fo.- $ 2 , 000 . Most ofjthe furniture
in the Durant and Stump homes
was saved, though] much of it
was'da m aged.
The origin of the fire is a mys¬
tery, though there is strong evi-
denc^Mhat it was the work of an
incendiary. A lady who resides
just across the street from Brown's
residence saw a man run out of
the front yard just as the flames
leaped from the rear windows,
and she called to him to give the
alarm, but lie rail on down the
street. It is said that Mr. Du¬
rant also heard noises which
aroused him, and lie was at his
window looking out when the
flames broke out.
It was quite evident from the
rapidity with which the lire
burned that the bouse was well
oiled. Mr. Brown’s family were
not at home, bbing at the lioim;
of relatives spending the night.
Is is not known what their loss
w ill be, though they had some
insurance.

cates croup, is usually well known

A CHRISTMAS SERMON.
Dr. Branch Delivered an Eloquent Ser¬
mon at the Methodist Church.
Rev-. J. O. Branch, D. D., pre¬
siding elder of the Valdosta dis-
triet, preached at the Adel Meth¬
odist church Sunday morning to a
large and appreciative congrega-
tion. Ilis discourse was appro-
priate to the Christmas season.
The sermon was a powerful one,
persuasive- and logical, as tho
preacher sought to show the di¬
vinity of Christ. Dr. Branch is an
argumentative preacher and his
sermons are always instructive.
Dr. Branch also preached Sat¬
urday morning and held the
quarterly conference in the after¬
noon. The next conference will
be held at Nashville, though the
date has not vet been announced.
Mr. S. T. Tygart, one of the stew¬
ards of the Nashville church, was
present at the conference Satur¬
day.
Domestic Troubles.

BY FIRE AT QUITMAN.
A Loss of About £ 25,000 Was Caused
Merchants.
Quitman, Ga., Dec. 27.—The a'
most disastrous fire here for
number of y jars broke out at 4
o'clock this morning in the store
of The Tillman Hardware Com¬
pany-, raid spread to that of Mr.
Elder, groceries, and then to that
of J. O. Lewis, general merchan¬
dise, and the Masonic Lodge over it.
Three good streams of water
were got on the fire at once, but
in a fe\y minutes one of the mains
burst, cutting the pressure dowi
so that they were not effective.
The fire engine kept in reserve
for such emergencies was brdugh
out, but there was some delay ii
getting it to work, But for a
heavy fire wall next to the Lewis
store an 1 tho work of the engine,
the whole block would have gone.
The total loss is about $25,000;
stock of Tillman Hardware Co.,
$12,000, with $4,000 insurance;
stock of M. Elder, about $300,
with $1,000 insurance: the Masons
lose about $ 1,000 on the building
with $750 insurance, and $500 on
furniture, with no insurance.
Lccris carried no insurance, but
most of the stock was saved. Tho
other two buildings were also in¬
sured, but tiie amounts cannot lie
learned.
