forgot however to mention that we came
near losing Major Johnston when Baker
hung the big trout. The excitement was so
great and the boat so small, that it came

we heard, we would he bound to oppose

ment. The jury however, decided the
question in favor of a Republic.
Saturday morning we left at sunrise for
Alligator Island where we shot about twenty
Alligators —the largest was a buster-«
weighing It was supposed, upwards ol 1200
pounds. We ordered his skin to hi* shipped
on the Shamrock next, week to the Editor
of the News, so that everybody could see ii
and thereby give us the credit of being a
veracious historian, Mi. Perkins killed.this
monster and says tliallie found him asleep

ing him cautiously, lie put two percussion

mouth with powder, and then retieating to
a thicket of hushes near by, threw sticks

brought down his upper jaw with a crash,
the caps exploded and the powder blew ofi
his head and thus Mr. P. says he killed the
gigantic monster. When the hide reaches
Eufaula have it exibUcd a tew days as a
curiosity.
We reached Savannah Sunday morning
aud look rooms at the Screven house,
by far tin* best hotel in the city. We
passed Sunday and Monday here very
agreeably, and are especially under
obligations 1« our friends, Major Bates,
Wm Henry Woods, Mr Screven and Mr
Holcombe for cburtecies extended to ns.
We leave this morning for Brunswick, oil
steamer Nick King and expect to arrive
there early.in the morning, from Brunswick
we will write again.
