From Geek, page 4A
While there is no need to scare
the wits out of your child by
preaching the lurid dangers that
await in cyberspace, talking it
over with them is important. En
courage discussions between you
and your child by learning about
and discussing what they enjoy
online. Informing your children
about online safety is not as hard
as some of those "other" discus
sions either. Simply re-wording
some of your best speeches about
not talking to strangers, accept
ing things from people they don't
know and telling you when they
feel scared can go a long way in
cyberspace.
Understand that technology is
not foolproof. Make it your job
to learn about parental control
software, like browsers and fil
ters, check out the control fea
tures that your Internet Service
Provider and Web Browser offer
up. Know that these items can go
a long way to help your kids avoid
certain sites, certain words and
certain people, but understand
that these are gadgets and no sub
stitute for responsible, loving,
adult supervision.
With all of today's challenges to
bringing up kids safely these
days, the Internet offers up no
breaks. An important tip to re
member is that the Internet is a
new and largely unregulated spe
cies. Learn to keep your kids safe
online by staying aware and edu
cated, and by coming up with
some innovative family Internet
policies of your own design, and
share them with us here. Remem
ber. we're all in this together!
