Development Council, The Uni
versity of Georgia and Georgia 4-
H, was held September 9- 11,
2001 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center
in Eatonton, Georgia. The theme
for the summit was "Engaging the
Voices of Youth".
One hundred fifty-five Georgia
counties selected youth and adult
leaders to attend the conference
on scholarship.
The Lee County delegates were:
Holly Ball, Jennifer Hammond,
Angela Goza and Blake Spencer.
A highlight of the Summit was
the release of the executive sum
mary findings of the "Engaging
the Voices of Youth Survey" con
ducted by Georgia 4-H in partner
ship with the Georgia Rural De
velopment Council. A total of
3,999 seventh and eighth graders
from across the state of Georgia
participated in the survey. This
data was used as the foundation
for the Youth Summit.
Participants in the Georgia
Youth Summit learned about the
diversity of opportunities and
people in Georgia. They also
studied the demographics and
economic dimensions of our
state. In addition, they took part
in leadership development work
shops and activities including

Unemployment Rate
Declines In August
The Georgia Department of
Labor announced that the state’s
unemployment rate declined
two tenths of a percent in
August to 3.8 percent, the same
as in August of 2000. The
decrease primarily resulted
from the return of approxi
mately 60,000 temporary
workers to nonwork activities,

Firefighters!
The recent tragedies our country
has suffered has opened our eyes
to so many things that we take for
granted. The firefighters in our own
community go unnoticed each and
everyday as they risk their lives right
here in South Georgia. We are proud
of two such men who are employees
of Ferrellgas and we want to say...
ThankYou

"While we ’re glad to see a
slight drop in the unemploy
ment rate, the fact is labor
market statistics for August are
no longer relevant. The terror
ists attacks on September 11
significantly altered the
employment outlook nationally
and here in Georgia." said State
Labor Commissioner Michael
Thurmond. "Although the
airline and hospitality industries
are expected to be among the
hardest hit, many others are
likely to suffer job losses as
well.
"The Georgia Department of
Labor is redoubling its efforts to
assist workers affected by this
crisis by processing their
unemployment insurance claims
and helping them get back to
work as soon as possible."
The number of jobs in
Georgia declined in August to
4,005,000, down 2,900 jobs, or
one-tenth percent, from
4,007,900 in August of 2000.
The last time the state failed to
add jobs on an annualized basis
was December 1990 to Decem
ber 1991, when a much larger
number of 38,800 jobs was lost,
for a 1.3 percent negative
growth rate.
The annualized job changes in
the metro areas from August
2000 to August 2001 are as
follows: Albany, jobs up by
300, or five-tenths percent, from
59,100 to 59,400; Athens, jobs
down by 2,600, or 3.5 percent,
from 73.600 to 71,000; Atlanta,
jobs up by 4,700, or two-tenths
percent, from 2,207,600 to
2,212,300; Augusta, jobs down
by 1,200, or six-tenths percent,
from 203,400 to 202,200;
Columbus, jobs up by 500, or
four-tenths percent, from
122,000 to 122.500; Macon,
jobs up by 300, or two-tenths
percent, from 151,700 to
152,000; Savannah, jobs down
by 600, or four-tenths percent,
from 137,800 to 137,200.
