LCHS 2001
Advanced
Placement
Scholar
Awards
By Edwina Gleaton
Lee County High School has
been notified of students who re
ceived Advanced Placement (AP)
recognition by the College Board
as a result of their exceptional
achievement on the college-level
AP examinations. Only about 13
percent of the more than 840,000
students who took AP Examina
tions in May of 2001 performed
at a sufficiently high level to merit
such recognition.
AP Coordinator Ms. Edwina
Gleaton explained that the AP
Scholar Award is awarded to stu
dents who qualified by complet
ing three or more AP Examina
tions with grades of 3 or higher.
AP Scholars were Erin Bauchat,
Cristy Bryant. Jennifer Ritter,
Brandon Seagle. and Cameron
Whitright. With the exception of
Brandon Seagle, all of these stu
dents graduated in May of 2001.
Brandon, however, is taking four
AP courses this year and thus will
have the opportunity for addi
tional college credit and further
College Board recognition when
he completes his exams at the end
of this school year.
Students named AP Scholar
with Honor were Jessica
Cochran. Lindsay Frakes. and
Paul Johstono. This recognition
is granted to students who receive
an average grade of at least 3.25
on all AP exams taken and grades
of 3 or higher on four or more of
these exams on full-year courses.
Students who qualified for
Scholar with Distinction were
Russell Hallman and Eric Innis.
This award is given to students
who receive an average grade of
at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken,
and grades of 3 or higher on five
or more of these exams on full-
year courses.
The highest grade that can be
earned on the exams is a 5. Be
cause of the high-level work that
is required in AP courses, many
colleges will accept scores from
3-5 for awarding college credit.
Students scoring a 5 in Biology
were Cristy Bryant. Brandon
Seagle, Russell Hallman, and Eric
Innis.
Jessica Cochran and Lindsay
Frakes scored 5's on English Lan
guage and Composition; Paul
Johstono scored a 5 on English
Literature and Composition, and
Brandon Seagle and Paul
Johstono scored 5's on European
History.
At present, LCHS offers AP
courses in Biology, Calculus,
English Language and Composi
tion. English Literature and Com
position. European History, and
Psychology. Students take AP
Examinations in May each year
after completing challenging col
lege-level courses at their high
schools.
