What the Bible Teaches
Hammond Counsels
Workers In New York
The “Word” For The Week
By Dr. Dennis Prutow
By Frank Taylor
In Ephesians 6:11 we are told
that we are doing battle in
everyday life against the wiles
of the devil. The word “wiles”
means “strategy" or “plans of
war,” so Satan is attacking the
lives and causes of Christians.
He is at war with those who
would defeat his plans, which is
why Christians feel so much of
the effect of his presence.
Satan is not after those who
already belong to him; he is
after those who want to defeat
him. That is why we need to
understand his efforts, as the
Apostle Paul wrote to the
Corinthians, so that we are not
ignorant of his devices.
The Bible says that Satan’s
purpose is to blind the sinners
and beguile Christians, and to
hurt and discourage those who
belong to God. He will do
anything to disturb the mind,
deceive the heart, and defeat
life. He is actively involved in
the world today, and if you read
your Bible you’ll find he has
always been active. He led Lot
into Sodom, got peter to deny
Christ, made Annanias and
Sapphira lie to the church, and
even dared attack Jesus Christ.
If he isn’t afraid to attack the
Lord of Glory you should not
be surprised to discover that he
is willing to attack the most
mature Christian. He wants to
bring division into the church
today, paralyzing its ministry
and scandalizing its leaders.
The thing most often forgot
ten by Christians today is that
we live on Satan’s territory. We
are not fighting on neutral
ground, or on God’s ground.
The battle we fight is fought on
the enemy’s territory. Chris
tians today are fighting a war
on foreign turf, and the world,
the flesh, and the devil are our
common enemies. They all
maneuver in order to entice us
and cause weakness and failure
in our lives. So if we are going
to fight in this war, we had
better recognize that there
really is a war going on and
how it will be fought.
The
devil has
three
primary
goals,
and it
should
be
evident
that he is
at least
moderately successful in each
of his attacks. First, he is after
every individual Christian to
destroy his life. Second, he is
after every Christian home to
destroy its unity, its purity, and
its oneness. Third, he after
every Christian church, to
erode its ministry, discredit its
leaders, wipe out its financial
base, and destroy it so that it no
longer has a presence in the
world of darkness. 1 Peter 5:8
warn us: “Be sober, be vigilant
because your adversary the
devil walks about like a roaring
lion, seeking whom he may
devour.” That succinctly sums
up Satan’s purpose in the world
today. He is looking for people
to devour. He wants to devour
your testimony. He seeks to
devour your influence for Jesus
Christ. He desires to find every
little advantage he can get in
your life with the ultimate
purpose of devouring every
thing that could be used for
Christ’s purpose.
The Bible tells us that we are
in a war; the text in Ephesians
6:12 says, “we wrestle.” We
are not wrestling against flesh
and blood, but with a spiritual
enemy. The term wrestle is one
of great intensity. It pictures a
man with a grip on another,
pressing hard, straining every
muscle to pin him to the
ground. He uses all his energy
to resist. For the child of God
it is the straining of every
moral muscle, the testing of
every spiritual sinew. We are
not called as Christians to a
time of relaxation in the
summer’s sun-we are called to
a grim struggle with unseen
forces-and the fight is real.
Lynda Hammond, assistant vice
president of operations over the
Physical Medicine Department at
Phoebe Putney, recently spent
two weeks in New York City as a
Red Cross counselor to emer
gency workers and others who
directly suffered from the Sep
tember terrorist attacks. She has
since returned to her position at
Phoebe and is eager to tell of her
opportunity to assist those in
need.
"It was an unbelievable experi
ence for me," said Hammond,
who counseled people at Ground
Zero and at another location set
up for that purpose. "One loca
tion was really for victims fami
lies or people displaced from their
apartment or job. Those folks had
seen some pretty traumatic stuff
and had suffered the loss of
friends and family."
Her experience at Ground Zero
was also quite moving, she said,
as she talked with rescue work
ers. contractors and people work
ing to remove debris. The Red
Cross had a respite center set up
To be a Good Worker at Lee

that you are focused on the learn
ing activities, conscientious about
your work, tends to assigned tasks
diligently and with a good atti
tude. and helpful to others; in
other words, just a real pleasure
to have in class.
The following students were
named Good Workers during the
week of October 29th:
Kindergarten: Ashton Taylor -
Mrs. Bynum; Trace Tucker - Mrs.
Duke; A.J. McDonald - Mrs.

to offer some relief for those
working tirelessly to recover bod
ies and remove the tons of debris.
It was there that Hammond and
other counselors made them
selves available to the workers
who just needed to talk about
what they were dealing with.
Hammond sent emails to her
management team at the hospital
nearly every day while she was
in NYC, trying to convey her
feelings and what she was expe
riencing. "The people here in
New York have been great, and
the team I worked with was just
fabulous (even though their kid
ding about my accent was done
without mercy)." she wrote on her
final night in the city. “I'm on a
roller coaster of emotions, so if
you talk to me and I get weepy,
just ignore it; I'm okay."
Hammond had to undergo ex
tensive training to be certified as
a Red Cross counselor for disas
ter relief. She was among the
many Red Cross workers who left
their homes, families and jobs to
help in whatever way they could.

Our Gratitude to God
“You must be very thankful to
God for all you have,” I ex
claimed. The retort shocked me.
“I’ll have you know I’ve earned
all I have.” People today don’t
think of God as providing shel
ter. clothes, transportation, and
food. When Thanksgiving Day
comes along, they're glad for the
four-day weekend. They head for
the golf course.
Nabal, a rich character in the
Old Testament of the Bible, was
like this.
He had three thousand sheep
and a thousand goats. Even
though there was war in Israel,
Nabal’s flocks were protected by
a young man named David.
David camped in the area and
no one dared harm Nabal’s sheep
or goats.
He heard me
I will bless the LORD at all
times: his praise shall continually
be in my mouth. My soul shall
make her boast in the LORD: the
humble shall hear thereof, and be
glad. O magnify the LORD with
me, and let us exalt his name to
gether. I sought the LORD, and
he heard me. and delivered me
from all my fears. They looked
unto him, and were lightened: and
their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the
LORD heard him, and saved him
out of all his troubles. The angel
of the LORD encampeth round
about them that fear him, and
delivereth them. O taste and see
that the LORD is good: blessed
is the man that trusteth in him. O
fear the LORD, ye his saints: for
there is no want to them that fear
him. The young lions do lack,
and suffer hunger: but they that
seek the LORD shall not want any
good thing.
Come, ye children, hearken
unto me: I will teach you the fear
of the LORD. What man is he
that desireth life, and loveth many
days, that he may see good? Keep
thy tongue from evil, and thy lips
When David was in need of
food, would Nabal offer help?
Not on your life.
“Shall I then take my bread and
my water and my meat that I have
slaughtered for my shearers, and
give it to men whose origin I do
not know?” (1 Samuel 25:11).
Look at what Nabal said. “It’s my
bread, my water, my meat.”
God causes the grain to grow so
we have bread to eat. God causes
the animals to gain weight so we
can have hamburgers and steaks.
God makes water flow in rivers
and streams so we can drink. We
should give thanks to God for
these things rather than just pat
ting ourselves on the back.

from speaking guile. Depart from
evil, and do good; seek peace, and
pursue it. The eyes of the LORD
are upon the righteous, and his
ears are open unto their cry. The
face of the LORD is against them
that do evil, to cut off the remem
brance of them from the earth.
The righteous cry, and the LORD
heareth, and delivereth them out
of all their troubles. The LORD
is nigh unto them that are of a
broken heart; and saveth such as
be of a contrite spirit. Many are
the afflictions of the righteous:
but the LORD delivereth him out
of them all. He keepeth all his
bones: not one of them is broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked: and
they that hate the righteous shall
be desolate. The LORD
redeemeth the soul of his ser
vants: and none of them that trust
in him shall be desolate.
And my soul shall be joyful in
the LORD: it shall rejoice in his
salvation.
