Lee County Elementary School welcomes its newest famiLEE members!
Albany Museum of Art Introductory
Docent Session is August 20
Special to the Ledger
Summer is winding
down and the fall holi
day rush has not started
yet. It is a great time to
try something new.
If you are 18 years
old or older and enjoy
art, consider becoming
a docent at the Albany
Museum of Art. We
have a get-acquainted
session for those who
might be interested
from 5:30-6:30 pm on
Tuesday, Aug 20 at the
AMA.
“It will be a drop-in
information session on
what it means to be a
docent, and how it ben
efits the community and
the individual docent
as well,” Annie Vano-
tegham, AMA director
of education and public
programming, said. “It’s
open to anyone, and you
don’t have to be an artist
or an art historian to be
a great docent.”
Docents are museum
volunteers who welcome
visitors to the AMA,
and use their training to
engage museum guests.
They enrich guests’
experiences with the art
exhibitions by guiding
them through the galler
ies and providing infor
mation and highlights
about the artwork.
“This meeting is set
up just to give you an
idea of what a docent
does and how you can
share what you discover
about our exhibitions
with others,” Vano-
teghem said. “We’re not
asking anyone to make
an on-the-spot com
mitment, and there’s no
cost involved. Just drop
by sometime during the
hour.
Docents will get
behind-the-scenes expe
riences at the museum,
including tours of new
exhibitions and special
meetings with the cura
tor and some artists.
They will learn the best
ways to engage museum
guests. They will be
able to share what they
learn by speaking with
individuals and groups
of all ages.
At the get-acquainted
session, you will find
out about training and
when docents are most
needed at the museum.

1 Hemp Sesbania

This is probably the tallest hemp sesbania
plant I have seen.
The leaves of hemp sesbania are pinnate.
Each leaf has and even number of opposite
leaflets, ranging in number from tweny to
seventy.
Hemp Sesbania
Last week, I received
a call from Dr. Jack
Tippens. He and Mrs.
Tippens had a plant
in their yard that had
sprouted up by their
house and they wanted
to know what it was.
When I saw it, I recog
nized it immediately. It
was hemp sesbania.
Hemp sesbania grows
well in moist soil and is
often found growing in
ditches and in low-lying
areas of fields. This
plant is found mainly
in the Coastal Plain but
is occasionally found
in the Piedmont. It is
a major weed of rice in
Mississippi. It is also
a weed of soybeans
in places. Its height
and woody stem can
be problematic dur
ing harvest. The black
seeds contaminate grain
samples.
Hemp sesbania is in
the legume family along
with peas and beans.
Like other legumes,
hemp sesbania is able
to fix nitrogen from
the air for its use. This
plant grows to a height
ranging from three to
thirteen feet. Dr. Tip-
pens said that hum
mingbirds visited the
flowers of the plant in
his yard. The seed pods
and flowers of these
plants resemble those
of sicklepod and coffee
senna (commonly called
“coffeeweed”), which
are also legumes.
