The Case Of The Rejected Presidential Pardon
On a cold fall day
in November, George
Wilson and his buddy
James Porter robbed
a mail carrier in Phil
adelphia, threatening
his life and stealing the
mail. Ten days later they
robbed another mail
carrier. They were soon
captured, brought to trial
in April, found guilty of
putting the life of a U.S.
mail carrier in jeopardy
and robbery, and sen
tenced to execution by
hanging.
James Porter was hung
on July 2.
George Wilson, howev
er, had some influential
friends who pleaded to
President Andrew Jack-
son for mercy. President
Jackson issued a formal
presidential pardon,
dropping all charges.
Wilson would only have
to serve 20 years for
other crimes.
Inexplicably, official
court documents record
that Wilson decided to
“waive and decline any
advantage or protection
which might be sup
posed to arise from the
pardon. . . .” He stated
that he “had nothing to

say, and did not wish
in any manner to avail
himself in order to avoid
sentence.” He rejected a
Presidential pardon that
would spare his life.
The case was brought
to the United States
Supreme Court with
the question: if a man
is granted a pardon,
but says he refused it,
could he still suffer the
sentence?
Chief Justice Marshall
penned the Court’s
decision in May 1833.
“This Court cannot give
the prisoner the benefit
of a pardon unless he
claims the benefit of
it.... It is a grant to him;
it is his property, and he
may accept it or not as
he pleases.” He further
wrote, “A pardon is an
act of grace, proceeding
from the power entrust
ed with the execution of
the laws. (But) delivery
is not completed without
acceptance. It may then
be rejected by the person
to whom it is tendered,
and ... we have no pow
er in a court
to force it on
him.”
So George
Wilson was
hanged for
his crimes.
Why would
a person re
ject a pardon
from a death
penalty?
What a fool
ish choice!
Is it possible that some
would refuse a pardon
because they do not
want to acknowledge
their guilt? It is human
nature to think that we
are all pretty good and
have not done anything
bad enough - like that
guy over there. But the
Bible teaches that “all
have sinned and come
short of the glory of
God,” that “the wages
of sin is death, but the
gift of God is eternal life
through
Jesus
Christ
our Lord”
(Romans
6:23)
God has
offered
to all a
full and
complete
pardon for
sins. But
in order
to have the benefit of
the pardon, the pardon
must be accepted. God’s
pardon can be accepted
or rejected. Why would
a person reject so great
a gift?

Sarah Larson Named Miss
Sunbelt Expo Rodeo Queen
Special to the Ledger
Miss Sarah Larson,
the new Agricultural
Science teacher at Lee
County Middle School
West Campus, recently
earned the title of Miss
Sunbelt Expo Rodeo
Queen. The pageant
consisted of a writ
ten exam over equine
and rodeo knowledge,
personal interviews,
appearance modeling,
speeches, impromptu
questions, and horse
manship. Larson stated,
“I’m very excited and
very humbled to have
won. It’s something I’ve
been working towards
for the past three
years.” She previously
held the title of Miss
Spirit of the Sunbelt.
As Miss Sunbelt Expo
Rodeo Queen, she now
has the opportunity to
compete in Oklahoma
City, OK, to repre
sent Georgia and the
Sunbelt Ag Expo at
the Miss Rodeo USA
Pageant.
Larson has previously
held rodeo titles in both
Georgia and her home
state of Florida and
has shown horses with
the American Ranch
Horse Association for
the last 10 years. She
said it was her passion
for horses and sharing
her knowledge with
others that inspired her
to become an agricul
ture teacher. Larson
is a recent graduate
of Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College’s
Agricultural Education
program and comes
to Lee County School
System as a first year
teacher. As a recipient
of ABAC’S STEPS

Larson attended the
National Association of
Agricultural Educators
Convention as a partici
pant in the Future Agri

is excited to be joining
the Lee County family
