Commissione Approves
Sheriff Vehicles
County
Leasing
During their meeting
August 27th, the county
commissioners approved
a motion to lease 10
vehicles for the Sheriff’s
Office. They will also
lease two vehicles for the
Public Works Depat-
ment.
The commssion tabled
creating a public park
on Creekside Drive. The
county recently acquired
four lots, 618, 626, 634
and 650 on Creekside
Drive through the Haz
ard Mitigation Program
(flood buyout). By mak
ing the lots into a public
park, it would provide
citizens another place to
have access to the creek
as well as being available
for rescue in case of an
emergency.
The millage rate was
set by the commissioners
Tuesday night, the coun
ty millage rate is 17.113
mills for general county
government with a 3.005
roll back on the millage
rate. The net millage rate
is 14.098 mills in both
the incorporated area of
Lee County as well as
the unincorporated area.
A public hearing was
held concerning the
New
Employees
for
LCMS-
East
Multi-Jurisdictional
Hazard Mitigation Plan
Update for the county
and the cities of Lees
burg and Smithville.
The intent is to make
residents, businesses
and operators of critical
infrastructure facilities
less susceptible to the
effects of any future
natural disaster.
Tara Okon was ap
pointed to an unexpired
term on the Georgia
Behavioral Health Advi
sory Council. The term
will expire July 31, 2021.
Tara Okon is a trained
physical therapist who is
interested in providing
more educational aware
ness to those who work
with disabilities.
A part-time accountant
position was approved
for the tax commission
er’s office. The salary
will be paid by transfer
ring funds from contin
gency to salaries within
the tax commissioner’s
budget.
The commissioners
were updated on non-
compliant addressing
of some residences
on Chase Hill Lane.
Concern with poten
tial emergencies was
addressed by public
safety personnel. Chase
Hill Lane is a private
road whose houses have
mail boxes on Fussell
Road. Some of the
houses share the same
address with A, B and
C added to the address.
The addresses on the
mail boxes do not reflect
the correct location of
the houses associated
with the mail boxes.
Multi-addresses do not
conform to the National
Emergency Number As
sociation (NENA) which
will become effective
soon in Lee County to
improve emergency
response time.

Asparagus
Doug Collins, Lee County
Extension Coordinator ^
Putting }Cnowledge toWorkN ^
I am trying my hand at growing asparagus
from seed. It is usually grown from roots
called “crowns”. Even if things go well, it will
be a few years before these plants are able
to yield asparagus spears.
Asparagus
Asparagus is a pe
rennial crop that will
produce fifteen or more
years. Because aspar
agus is so long lived,
choose the planting site
carefully.
Asparagus can be
grown on just about
any well-drained soil.
Asparagus grows best
in soil with a pH of 6.5-
7.5, but requires a pH of
at least 6.0 to produce
well. Before planting,
till twenty pounds of
10-10-10 fertilizer per
1,000 square feet into
the top six inches of the
soil.
Generally, one-year
old crowns are planted.
They should be planted
where they will not be
injured by tilling. As
paragus is often planted
in beds like flowers
and mulched to control
weeds and conserve
moisture.
Asparagus can be
planted from Novem
ber through December.
Recommended varieties
include Jersey Giant,
Jersey Knight, Mary
Washington, and Purple
Passion.
Asparagus crowns can
be planted in furrows
about six inches deep.
The asparagus will ben
efit from an application
of phosphorous fertiliz
er to the bottom of the
furrow before planting.
The crowns should
be spaced eighteen to
twenty-four inches apart
in the furrow. If more
than one row is plant
ed, the rows should be
three feet apart. After
planting, fill the furrows
back to the original soil
level. Do not harvest
asparagus during the
first year after planting.
During the second
year, spears can be har
vested for about three
weeks. Spears that are
seven to nine inches
long can be snapped off
at ground level. Avoid
waiting until the foliage
starts to unfurl from
the spear as spears
that have reached this
stage will contain tough
fibers. Spears can be
harvested for four to
six weeks during the
second harvest year and
for six to eight weeks
during the third harvest
year. When the diame
ter of three-quarters of
the spears is less than
three-eighths of an inch,
stop harvesting spears.
At the end of the
harvest, snap all of the
spears off at ground
level and apply one-half
pound of ammonium
nitrate per fifty feet of
row.
Harvest asparagus
in the morning while
it is cool. To store the
spears for one or two
weeks, immerse them
in ice-cold water to cool
them quickly. Remove
them from the water
and place them in plas
tic bags. Store in the
refrigerator.
