Having received and assortment of good books from one of the
largest Publishing Houses of the South, 1 am in position to supply your
homes with choice reading matter.
The importance of good books in the home can not be over
estimated. It would Ire much easier for us to train our boys and git Is
in the way they should go if we kept them supplied with good liter
ature.
Most people read something, and isn’t it a thousand times better
for them to read books that are elevating, than to fill their minds with
jM>ison!
The way to keep the mind from thinking evil thoughts is to crowd
it with good ones.
For your benefit I give Itelow a partial list of the books with
which I can supply you.

By Natural Reasoning.
A keen student of human nature
must have written the following.
"When you see a young man sailing
down a street shortly after midnight
with his collar crumpled, you can
make up your mind that there's a
young girl crawling upstairs not far
distant, with her shoes under her arm
and an extinguished lamp In her
band.”
Mothers Resented Charity.
A school teacher in Gelderland,
Holland, was violently attacked re
cently by parents of some children to
•whom In the course of a lesson on
edible fungi, he had given some
mushrooms to eat. “We can afford
to give our children food,’ declared
the Indignant parents, "and we need
no mushroom charity from the teach
er.”

THE RAGGED SCHOOLS OF
ENGLAND.
By A. W. WiACY.
Juvenile delinquency reached
its maximum in England about
the middle of the I act century.
During the five >*• -s ending
1842 one-third o' the 2 c< emit
ted for triai in the courts of
England were under twenty
years of age. In London alone
it was estimated there were 3(V
CCO children- under si ecn who
depended on tide - for their
existence. In 1c.'.0 .1 scotch gar
dener living in L and •. conclud
ed he would do ss ' i ng
thess “Arabs of civilization,”
and eet up a school, in a stable,
for the pur pace of reclaiming
some of them if possible. The
excellent results obtained at
tracted attention, and many oth
er peoole became interested In
the welfare of these outcasts.
This was the beginning of the
“ragged schools,” which now
form a prominent feature of
elementary education in Eng
land. Some idea of their Im
portance may be gained from
the statement that while there
are about 800,000 children under
the care of the London school
board, 150,000 others are han
dled by these voluntary "ragged
schools.”

By Their Speech Ye Shall Know Them
A traveler who believed himself tc

a cannibal Isle hid for three days in
terror of his life. Driven out by bun
ger, he discovered a thin wisp ol
smoke rising from a clump of bushes
Inland, and crawled carefully to study
the type of savages about It. Just at
he reached the clump he heard a voice
say: "Why in did you play thaf
card?” He dropped on his knees and,
devoutly raising his hands, cried:
“Thank God, they are Christians!"
