The popular notion- about South Af-
rrica Is that it Is >a vast, dry, treeless
plain, little suited :to crop farming or
stock raising, hut lt Is really one of
the best regions for sheep. The west
ern half of it its 'almost rainless, and
all but the coast 'lands along the south
and east have a- deficient rainfall, so
that farming its not possible. But over
nearly the Whole area nutritious
grasses grow, and water can be had
for stock simply-by sinking wells. It
is estimated that'before the war 13,-
000,000 sheep were grazing in the
Great Karoo desert in the northern
part of Capo Colony, and the flocks of
the Transvaal were without number.

It is well known-that many diseases
are propagated by vermin. Files
transport tuberculosis, mosquitoes
yellow fever and malaria, rats the
plague. Mr. V. lHaazen in the An-
nales do Pharmacle reports tbe result
of experiments on tbe destruction of
vermin, that are of .Immediate prac- :

exposure for 24 ihours to an atmos
phere containing-six grams of formic
aldehyde per cubic metre. With eight
grains a certain number died. All per
ished with nine grains, per cubic metre.
Tbo gas furnished by the burning ot
25 grains of sulphur per cubic metre
also destroyed all these pests. Flies
and mosquitoes are killed by two
grains of formle aldehyde per cubic
metre of air. Fleas are destroyed by
seven grains per cubic metro, or
' by burning sulphur. Rats and mlcs
are destroyed by 36 hours’ exposure
to an atmosphere containing 15 grains
■of formic aldehyde per cubic metre,
but tbe full exposure of 36 hours
must be given; £4 hours la not suf
'fleient.
The Holland Primrose.
There Is a plant in Holland known
os the evening primrose, which grows
to a height of fiv« or six feet, and
hears a profusion of large, yellow
flowers, so brilliant that they attract
immediate attention, even at a great
distance. But the chief peculiarity
about the plant la the fact that tbe
flowers, which open just before sun
set, burst into bloom so suddenly that
they give one the impression of some
magical agency. A man who has seen
this sudden blooming says it is Just
as if some one bad touched the land
with a wand, and thus covered it all
at once with a golden sheet

*A TRAIN L.IKE A FISH.
Covered With Scales of Metal bo .Re
duce Wind Reslatanoe.
.-At the recent speed'trials on .the
Berlin-Zossen road it was found that
the wind resistance to a train under
speed was one of the most serious ob
stacles In the way of obtaining the de
sired results. It was found that while
at a speed of 50 milesjier hour this
resistance on a still day was about
62.2. pounds per square meter of the
surface of tbe front end of tbe car,
the rate Increased very' rapidly, with
the augmentation of speed, so that at
a pace of 93.7 miles the .resistance
rose to 167.5 pounds.per square me
ter of impinging surface. .Every pro
jecting part, every window, door or
other indentation which could form a
pocket to catch the wind created by
such high velocities. Increased the re
sistance to he overcome, so that In all
future experiments, the company ot
rapid transit will require that the.
factor ot air reslatanoe shaU be taken
into careful acount
These experiments will be continu
ed and the matter of wind pressure
will be looked after la the .construc
tion of a train, which will be 'tried
next , year on this line. This is .to be
done .by enveloping the engine .and
train,, from pilot to rear platform, in a
shield of sheet steel. Jointed so as to
secure flexibility in passing curves,
and «o constructed as to Intdoso the
locomotive and cars la a continuous
tube, uniform throughout in size and
presenting no projecting Irregularity
which shall catch the resisting air.
The front of tho engine will be point
ed or wedge-shaped, tbe sheath will
inclose as far as possible the running
gear of the can, and even the wheels
of both engine and cars will be closed
disks of metal Instead of, as now,
spoked wheels with openings tc-
catch the air
Tbe purpose of the competition Is
to secure a design of train accommo-
dating 100 passengers and their bag
gage, which shall make a speed of 75
miles an hour under the conditions of
roadbed now existing on the Prussian
State Railways.
